How would you pronounce this beach?

We all know British place names can be problematic to pronounce property. For example, Leominster is pronounced lemster. Even British people get the names wrong, much to the amusement of the locals.

Thankfully, most are straightforward. Take one of my local beaches, Bullslaughter Bay. It's pronounced exactly as it's written, no tricks.

It's about 40 mins hike from the nearest car park and access is through military land, so not always possible. But there's another problem, one people like to argue over.

Is it pronounced Bull slaughter or bull's laughter?
So without Googling, what's your best guess?

Correct answer is LAUGHTER. Named because bull seals singing is supposed to sound like laughing

Assuming one of the two choices is correct, I pick Bull Slaughter, that probably gets pronounced something like BULLSTAH.

Celtic words often have different pronunciations than how they look. The main port outside Dublin Ireland, Dunloughaire, is pronounced DUNLEEREE, an Irishman once taught me.

It's an English word. In welsh it would be Porthllechog or Pwll Y Tarw depending who you ask. Celtic words are nearly always pronounced exactly as they look (if we pinch a word we just write it phonetically eg eliffant, dolffin) just a case of knowing a few rules and you can pronounce 99% with ease

I have personally never heard a bull laugh. That would be something new to me. However, to slaughter a bull, a cow or just about any other animal on a beach where the water would wash the blood away or to push them over the cliff so that they get killed upon impact on those rocks seems to be the better option.

Thus, my vote goes for Bull Slaughter even though I would much rather prefer Bull's Laughter but honestly, it makes no sense to me.

I would go with the first option. Seeing how steep the cliffs are, I imagine prehistoric people driving a herd to the cliffs and killing the bulls once they fall down. I understand that's how people in prehistoric times killed for food when their prey was too big for comfort and direct confrontation.

Is my imagination running off? Maybe. Nowadays, we just go to the nearest supermarket or order a Big Mac with triple toppings.

We have a store brand ice cream called “Purple Cow”. The ads used to say something about happy cows. They were always smiling but i never heard one laugh. Bull Slaughter cause people are more likely to slaughter bulls then to tell them jokes that have them roaring with laughter.

Locally it is always funny to hear visitors trying to pronounce place names that derive from aborigine names like woolloomoolloo so I will understand you laughing at me when I tackle Leominster.
