Okay so, I'm white and my girlfriend is black, and neither one of us get it. What's the point?
There's no point. Martin Luther King Jnr (a personal hero of mine) fought against segregation. These wankers, utterly betray his memory.
Read my comment. There's nothing racist about this. I think it's amazing the black student body is being recognized for their hard work. Oh and I'm black myself.
@misstalia_95 Yeah but why do you want a separate thing? Would you care if the white students got the same thing? It's only fair.
Actually no, it wouldn't be fair. This is what I told another guy: White people do not experience the struggles black people do. Whether you want to admit it or not, there are privileges white people experience on a daily basis that black people do not and it all comes to skin color. That is why a black graduation is so important. Despite all the odds and everything put in our way to derail our success we graduated. White people will never know what that feels like.
@misstalia_95 Yes there are some racist mofos out there, but the students didn't live through segregation. Honestly, I would be disappointed if I couldn't graduate with my friend and girlfriend because of a backs only thing.
@Xbox720guy why is this so hard for you? You CAN graduate with your girlfriend. Black graduation is 100% optional, any black student that doesn't want to participate doesn't have to. And trust me, black people DO still experience segregation. You however as a white person just don't see it.
@misstalia_95 you are literally all over this post making no sense at all. ''White people do not experience the struggles black people do''
you dont know what struggles other people are having. the fact that you undermine people and call them privileged based of their skin tone is just another excuse to be racists. a lot of you people like you are hypocrites. Your life is not tougher for the sole reason of being black. What do you have to say to the whites who live in rural places like the apalche mountains? or the whites in southern california who are struggling to get drinking water? whites being poisoned in north daktoa? OH NO, ITS ALL ABOUT YOU.
@GAGSUCKS333 you sound so dumb right now. Look, I know it sounds terrible but the reality is life is easier if you are white. List all of the unarmed white men killed by police then list all the unarmed black men killed by police. The bottom line is, if you are white you have privilege. Affirmative action wouldn't exist if this wasn't true.
@misstalia_95 This black gradation seems like a form of segregation to me.
it is a form of segregation, but her hypocrisy and arrogance will never let her see it. people dont stop being racist just because they are black, and she is clearly a racist. she told me, if you aren't black you have no argument. This means in her eyes xbox guy, that you have no argument.
@misstalia_95 It's because I'm white that I don't get it? Why doesn't my girlfriend then?
@Xbox720guy well the good news is, what it seems like to you is irrelevant
dude, dont even pay her any mind. People who dont see anything wrong with this which is obviously a segregation tactic that says you have to be black to be apart of it are never going to realize how stupid they really are. She is lost in her own stupidity but thinks she is smart
@GAGSUCKS333 I'm graduating the University of Texas at Austin on the 20th. Where are you graduating from?
@misstalia_95 Excuse me, miss? Can you explain why certain black people don't get it? It can't be because they are white.
@misstalia_95 you can graduate college without common sense. Also, its not of your business on where im going to school and what im training for.
Maybe they can get biggie to speak... Wait tupac.. Shit no, martin luth... Shit he's dead too.
Ooo juicy j will probably officiate
my thoughts are black people are pushing for segregation again.
I think it's dumb.
It's only segmenting people into Harvard Grads and black Harvard Grads.
I dislike when people in power pussyfoot around to try and make people happy and end up failing at it.
Not racist or segregating, but pretty dumb and pointless. I'm sure most people that wasn't Black didn't give two flying fucks if they didn't wanna attend the normal ceremony.
It will only create division, and just think about it if the roles were reversed and the white Harvard students had a whites only ceremony the black students would be screaming racist
It completely shits on everything MLK stood for.
Agreed... these type of people have been shitting on MLK for several years now.
@AleDeEurope I think we've come to the point where it's clear that races will NEVER be able to coexist. However, I've accepted that fact a long time ago.
Idc. And I don't understand why people let things bother them.
I think this is stupid and most likely some sjw bullshit.
i'm not going to either so i don't really care, if they wanna have a separate graduation, let them. They probably paid upwards of a million dollars for their degree anyway
If majority of the students are ok with it, especially the white ones. I don't care, just hope this doesn't become a thing so that people start thinking it's ok
I don't really care. They can do whatever makes them happy.
Elarra, I am going to accuse of being unnecessarily provocative with the wording.
Harvard is not holding a separate graduation ceremony for "Black" students.
This is something the students who are participating are doing themselves.
"Harvard to hold graduation ceremony for black students only"
Literally the title of one of the articles. And Harvard has to approve something like this anyway. So it may have been started by students but Harvard is still hosting it.
But you can choose the title of your thread. And you could have explained how everyone's impression is wrong.
Harvard has nothing to do with the private ceremony these young adults are holding. You and I know there are reasons for the impression given that Harvard sanctioned this.
You're right. I can. And I did. I chose the title of the article.
But when I pose questions, I don't give my opinion. I give quotes and statements so people can draw their own conclusion to begin a discussion. Notice how there are two separate articles being quoted.
I didn't hide any of the reasons. They're in the articles. Pretty sure people on g@g can read for themselves.
Well, I guess we just disagree here. I respect you as a highly intelligent articulate person. But, I disagree that the average GaGer will go and read for themselves. Most here are impulsive. Discussions about race (which are actually about culture) are ill-informed, based on mythology, emotionally charged, etc.
And you are one of the few people who can logically, rationally articulate a position on a subject that is already considered provocative because so many people try to avoid the issue.
www.vibe.com/.../
@orphan The vibe article says the same thing.
bit racist tbh, sick of blacks getting special treatment
Why not a graduation ceremony for Native Americans? Why not one for whites?
Seriously though that is very bizzare
Bizarre*
I have not heard one valid argument for this type of celebration.
Because there is none.
Thats meaingless smart people who finish school and work hard should celebrate togther
What exactly are Harvard trying to prove here? It's a stupid idea.
If they had a whites only graduation, everyone would lose their minds.
Maybe the opening speech is given in ebonics. A bunch of white people won't understand s*** :D
Oh, did I invade your safe space?
I don't care. If they want to have their little black power rally, then go ahead and have fun.
Racism. Pure and simple.
Racism: "Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior." Enlighten me on how this fits the definition. It's segregation maybe, but certainly not racist.
It discriminates people of a different skin color from the graduation. From what you're saying, colored bathrooms or schools shouldn't matter so long as you don't feel superior. Only that's not how it works. By creating these environments you are creating hostilities on the basis of skin color. Why can't a white person attend? Because he's not qualified based on skin color alone. Why is skin color a qualification? it isn't. saying it is is saying that one skin color is superior to the other. ergo this is racist
@ravedave Discrimination. If white people aren't allowed to attend and graduate at the ceremony then that is discriminatory. The acid test would be the reaction if a white only graduation ceremony was held. Do you think that would escape the racism tag?
Both of you need to go learn what the difference is between racism and segregation. If the motive behind this ceremony was that the students and faculty believe that whites are inferior, you might have a point, and it would qualify as racism, but as it stands that's not at all why this ceremony is being held.
@ravedave No, you need to stop relying on the dictionary to support you when you don't have anything to say for yourself. As I said, if you can tell me that a white only graduation ceremony would escape the accusation of racism then fine. You know you can't though, people would absolutely shit if it were even attempted. Words in the dictionary evolve based on their popular usage. There is no way that discrimination based on colour, whatever the reason, would be allowed if it was applied by white people.
Dude just because the public reaction would be to cry racism doesn't make it true. People now a days think jokes should be censored, and that hate speech isn't covered by the first amendment. The reaction of the masses means jack shit.
If your beliefs are not motivated by the idea that your race is superior, it's not racism. That's a simple fact. @ me when you actually have a logical argument, please and thank you π
@ravedave We're not talking about college campus hysteria, hate speech or censoring jokes. We're talking about exclusion based on race alone. Tell me where else that is allowed to happen in Western society? Give me some examples of white only ceremonies that are condoned by major institutions of international renown.
1st, only speech that isn't protected is speech that defends or promotes violence
2nd, segregation on skin color alone is not a reason to hold a ceremony. again, saying that skin color is a qualification. This is what makes the skin color superior quality. ergo, racism
Yes, the general population doesn't support segregation, but it's too sensitive a topic to argue when it's a minority group instituting the idea. But once again: racism =/= segregation. You don't seem to understand the fact that the general populations reaction does not change facts. No matter how many people whine and bitch about a "whites only ceremony" being racist, it's not unless the motives are because they think whites are superior. Like I said @ me when you've got a real rebuttal.
@GamerWB except their motives aren't only to separate the races, it's to celebrate the achievements and recognize the struggles this minority group has faced. Maybe if they made a black ceremony and white ceremony just because they believed they shouldn't be together, maybe you'd have a point.
@ravedave You don't get to decide what a real rebuttal is. You talk about facts but that would be assuming that the dictionary states absolute facts. How do you think the dictionary evolves? It is lead by the popular usage of words, hence why words are added to the dictionary with each and every addition. It is led by the masses whose opinions you discount. You base your entire argument on a dictionary defintion, you have offered nothing else. Your thinking is severely limited.

I never said anything about the white only ceremony, he did. I am saying by creating qualifications you are saying that there are different qualities in a person. Different qualities mean differences in the human themselves including some that would say is superior to others. this is what makes it racist. Calling it a different word (segregation) with a different meaning doesn't exclude the fact that it is also doing this. ergo racist
Lmfao, man if you seriously think racism should include things that aren't based on racial superiority I don't even know why I'm still responding. That's ridiculous, and you sound like a typical sjw.
If there notice are to separate achievement then they are declaring these achievements as a superior reason to hold a ceremony and there is no need to exclude white people from the ceremony to do that.
You seem to be missing my entire argument about qualification and how quality can determine superiority. Otherwise why not include white people in the ceremony? Is this not an achievement white civil rights advocates can bask in or are they not qualified because they aren't PoC?
@ravedave The SJW argument is the white flag of the modern debate. Accusations of white knight, beta, cuck or SJW are used when there is no other argument left. Still, if it gives you an easy out then I understand you taking it. Probably best all round.
Nah, it can also be used when you realize the opposition is too easily offended and wants to make everything that triggers them some sort of big issue. Like I said, wanting to change the definition of racism to include things not based on racial superiority is absolute nonsense.
Never changed the definition. Simply told you how segregation in this manner creates quality, ergo superiority, ergo racism. Choosing to ignore that is on you. This isn't a demographic. What you're saying is that you want a fruit salad that excludes tomatoes. I'm saying it's not a even a fruit salad and that your telling me that plants can't grow in the same soil as the others despite being ideal soil because of what kind of plant they are.
@ravedave I forgot to include accusations of offence and being triggered, they are also the white flags of debate surrender. You want me to be offended, I can understand that. It's another easy out for you. You clearly get your debating skills from Youtube videos. You are too rigid in your thinking. That's okay though, give it time, you'll learn.
Absolutely outrageous.
It clearly should be held on the 24th.
So like, that's stupid and embarrassing.
should there be a whites only graduation? answer is NO there you go
It's actually pretty empowering to see this.
@KiaTate How is it empowering?
Yes. You get it.
The same way white people were empowered being around other whites in Nazi Germany?
@MysteriousDarkness it feels good seeing black people graduate from an ivy league school. Especially when you don't see it in the media, all you see is drug dealers and baby mamas. It may encourage younger black people to go to college.
@piscesbluedreams it's not the same, nazi Germany was about a white people wanting to dominate everything and killing minorities, this is about seeing someone graduating. Seeing black people graduate from an ivy league school is inspiring. Maybe they don't want to be overshadowed by everyone else.
Yeah, you are right it's not the same but it's wrong to segregate by race and doesn't actually help improve current social attitudes. After all, isn't the aim to smash glass ceilings?
It's only natural that an elite-ist establishment like Harvard would though..
@piscesbluedreams why can't they have this one thing. They want their accomplishments shown, why do they have to share?
It's a free democracy so it's their choice. I personally don't get it.
It's regressive.
It just looks like African Americans struggled and achieved so much against the odds, to basically act like the privileged white people that oppressed them. Segregate themselves for a special ceremony for the special folk. The whole principle is fucked up.
Am not American by the way, so my opinion is that of an outsider.
@piscesbluedreams they want to celebrate their achievements and not be overshadowed by the majority.
Liberal racist bullshit
it's why I stopped being one once I got exposed to the real world.
S E G R E G A T I O N
its not racist or segregation
Black privilege
No such thing lol.
@LucyS514 whites couldn't hold a white only graduation but blacks can, special treatment and accommodation for them only. I think that qualifies as privilege
Positive discrimination. It separates us all as human beings. It's wrong on so many levels.
@LucyS514 no such thing? When you live in a first world country and do better than the millions of children who starve to death or die from preventable diseases in the world? Or get blown up? Check your goddam priveledge. You live a priveleged life, you're just too ignorant to see it. If you live in a house, are clothed, fed, inoculated, safe from harm you're priveleged. Get over yourself.
@LucyS514 you are a troll
@Blonde401 even in first world countries there is an order, and obviously blacks are getting privilge that whites are not according to this article, sure life in america isb etter than life in nigeria, but inside the country itself there are rules that must be followed you just murder someone and say " oh well life in first world countries are better so one person is killed thats not an issue" your logic makes no sense, but again making sense doesn't seem like your strognest point... you like sex?
@CoolSky01 your entire rant makes zero sense. She said an absolute 'no such thing' as black privilege. Yes there is. That was my point. I didn't bring murder into it. If you're going to argue try and be more cohesive in what you're saying because I have absolutely no clue what your argument is.
@CoolSky01 coming from you? Who also far has done nothing but rant and rave and show no real debate skills? Must have touched a nerve there. 'Your place is not here' π Ok son. If you say so.
@Blonde401 rant? no iam saying you have absolutly nothing to argue with
@CoolSky01 I wasn't even arguing with you in the first place? You're the one who's ranted and raved with no real argument. You've done nothing but insult me and make absolutely no points because you clearly can't debate. So you shouldn't be on a site that is about debate, not me. Stop headbutting the keyboard and type clearly for a change.
@Blonde401 ok
That's great 😊😊😊😊
I don't really care. They can do what they want.
I can care less.
Lol.
I don't really care
racism?
gud dayum homie!
