Delhi government have decided to make the transportation free for women. They say that it'll help in increasing the safety of women. But is it unfair for men? Do you see this as gender inequality? Are there better things on which the government can cut the prices instead of transportation?

No. The proposal seems rather ideal for the short-term, as opposed to being ideal for the long-term. In the grand scheme of things, offering services free of charge would not sustain profitability of business owners and salaries/wages of the workforce in the transportation sector alike.

As females are multicellular beings, they occupy space and have respective masses; they are no different to male passengers availing of the identical service. Offering transportation free of monetary charge would be to the disadvantage of transportation companies and cooperatives, as their profitability would most certainly be at stake. From a societal perspective, male-female dynamics are at risk of being distorted.

Contrary to what the poster acclaims, this proposal will certainly affect the financial viability of transportation entities, specifically Delhi Metro, the entity in question. As the market is volatile, prices tend to fluctuate; hence, there is no utmost certainty that ticket revenues would be duly reimbursed at all times. The Delhi government, therefore, has either the option (a) to make amends in its government budget allocation to accommodate the "free" fares of women while taking opportunity costs such as healthcare and education into account, or (b) to mandate raises in tax collections from citizens.

Such proposal, when implemented, is very likely to result in overcrowding, and this affirms the model of supply and demand. Under the assumption that the fare for women is non-existent, demand for metro transport will most likely increase; as a result, overcrowding seems more likely to occur in constrast to when prices for women are still imposed.

The idea in itself is commendable but there are a lot of obstacles that need to be addressed.

I understand that in India, criminality against women is very high and not only in larger cities. The same case applies basically to every major city worldwide.

Now, most bus and public transportation companies are privately owned and get their income from the sale of tickets. How could that income be maintained if more than half of the customers are traveling for free? The reply lies probably in the increase of the price of the tickets to all other users, which makes this system unfair towards those that must pay.

What about those that are financially weak like elderly passengers and children. If you waive the price for a gender you must also do it for those that are financially in a disadvantage. At the end, 10% of the passengers will pay for 90% of the users.

If the public transportation companies are in the hands of the state, then you have the same problem except that in order to remain profitable, the state will have to resort to compensate for the loss with general tax increase for example. Again, the entire population pays for a number of users that can profit from free transportation.

Whatever you do, there will always be someone that will oppose it and not without a justified ground.

The idea is good, the implementation problematic.

Depends on how safe the country is for women really.. But at the same time, if It's not that safe for women, it won't be that safe for men either in different ways.. I think It's kina unfair really.. But understandable at the same time.. I voted B. really..

It seems the women get into trouble there by taking other means of transport So if they can ride for free. They can be in the public eye. And thus be safer Its fine if they are safer i guess

The ticket money will be reimbursed by Delhi government. So ultimately, it's burden on taxpayers. There's no free lunch they say and it's true.

I also don't see how it's gonna increase safety. Just because ride is free, women won't travel when they don't need to. Aka, there would still me hours of day when there's less women in metro.

So for safety they could instead take other measures than handing out freebies

If the statement that women are more harshly affected by the rate hike than men then it seems reasonable that some accommodation take place. I don’t know that what is stated by the flyer is true, it seems reasonable to think that it is.
