Regarding police officers killing unarmed suspects, especially Black suspects, this is a rare instance of justice being served thus far. However, the next step is to await his sentencing in eight weeks and hope he doesn't get a slap on the wrist. The evidence was too overwhelming and the defense's arguments were too silly. Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd's neck for almost ten minutes when he was handcuffed and couldn't breathe. Even when he wasn't resisting and bystanders were telling him to take his knee off his neck, he refused. He even kept his hand in his pockets and even smirked at times in cameras while kneeling on his neck, showing the public just how much of a fucking asshole he was. He kept his knee on his neck even when Floyd went unconscious. Because of his actions, he died, and Chauvin's actions were clearly cold-blooded murder. Doing that to a restrained, unarmed, and handcuffed man is hard to justify or defend, no matter what your political views might be. This made the defense look crazy in court.

However, as much as I hate to say it, the primary reason I feel that they found Chauvin guilty was because the court was afraid of the major consequences America would have faced if he were found "not guilty." If you were following the case on TV, it was reported that the vast majority of the jurors even had a "neutral view" of Derek Chauvin despite what he did to George Floyd. There would have definitely been nationwide riots all over again, perhaps this time on a worse scale compared to last year. By finding him guilty, they basically saved much of America's city streets from destruction. If there wasn't the risk of rioting and if the video evidence didn't, clear as day, show a blatant instance of murder, Chauvin might would have gotten off scot-free. Nonetheless, I'm glad that justice was served. Now, the next step is to enact laws that punish police officers severely for violating their codes of conduct instead of giving them slaps on the wrist. Convicting Chauvin was one battle won, but punishing and convicting all bad cops in the future will win the war.

You do realize that A) blacks killed by cops without just cause is extremely low and B) most of the deaths that were of just cause could have been prevented if the idiot suspects didn't try to fight or pull a weapon. I would urge you to actually study the data with an open mind. You have to look at all the data, across the board, black and brown people are stopped more in traffic stops even know there is no evidence to support they commit more traffic infractions, those stops are 71 percent more likely to end up in a monetary fine than the same traffic stop for a white driver. There is no evidence to support that blacks smoke weed on a more regular basis than whites, but there are nine people of color for every one white person serving time right now for possession of marijuana. That is due largely in part to a bail system that has needed reform for decades. Black and brown males make up 58% of the prison population but only 27 percent of the U. S population. You can try to justify that however you want, but the glaringly obvious reason is that there is a systemic problem woven into the fabric of our country that has always tipped the scales in favor of the white population, from the founding of the country when blacks were considered 1/5 of a person to the formation of the prison system, which was literally just a way to "legally" continue slavery by making absurd laws and locking up free slaves to continue slave labor under the auspice of justice. In case you were wondering I am a 42 year old white woman, and I am educated on these facts now because I shut up and listened to the unshared experiences of people who didn't look like me. Our public school system is disgraceful in it's blatant attempt at revisionist history, there has been a cry for sweeping change by blacks for years, the Chauvin verdict isn't going to cause sweeping change overnight, but I know a lot more white people ready to stand and fight for humanity and equality now than I have in the past 42 years.

Simply because a victimization rate could be considered "extremely low" doesn't mean that the victims don't deserve justice. For example, the amount of children that suffer child molestation is "extremely low" compared to the amounts of children that do not suffer the same, but victims of child molestation still deserve justice. Thus, the same should definitely apply to victims of police brutality. George Floyd didn't try to fight or pull a weapon. His death could have been prevented if Chauvin never put his knee on his neck, instead wrote him a ticket/citation for the supposed counterfeit $20 bill, and went on his merry way. Even if most police killings are justified, that doesn't mean that police officers shouldn't be punished for causing unjust deaths. Rouge cops need to be held accountable for their crimes just as Black people are held accountable for their crimes. If you disagree with that, then you're part of the problem.

I agree with a lot of what you said. But you can't hold those comiting crimes accountable if ya can't catch them and put them through the system. if ya can't catch the guy who breaks the arm hold, speeding away in a car... who might kill someone on the way... then he got away. At what point do ya not pursue? The root problem in 9/10 of these issues is submission to police authority and "freaking out". I see why at this point, some are scared of the cops going to kill them. The new problem... lack of enforcement. Police at some point, aren't going to engage... already doing that in some areas. Why would it be worth it to them? Then more "black" people die and suffer... like chicago and baltimore, but that won't show up on the news.

A few peoples died similar to girlfriend, where are the cries for them? They weren't black. You are right DC was wrong and should be punshed, but we aren't seeing the whole picture as to why the do this. Police are brutal because the citizenship is an emotional and poorly disciplined mess.

We definitely have a police policy problem... they don't know how to handle people who do not submit to authority figures, in a highly violent society. Every emotional issue is met with "blast em dead". True for while people as well.

Neither. agree guilty of is death... degrees Id have to read the jury descriptions of the crimes as it mattered when I was on a jury. But I'm... unsatisfied because there is no explanation of behavior, no root cause and thus no fixes to put in place. See Toyota how they make great cars.. they find problems and fix them. Cops use this kind of force and multiple people have died before and after in similar manner knee to back/neck. Nothing has changed from any of these scenarios, and seems the social order/respect/fear of cops is worse... meaning many people react poorly to cops control and more trouble to come. Per your list, I see the viewpoint of racial justice and why people think that. I don't see it as a race issue in this case, it wasn't in the other cases people were killed like girlfriend noted above. I have to listen to the VP/Pres say this was race and privilege. Very predictable, frankly. I had no doubt that Chauvin was going to get convicted; what I did and still do, doubt, is how the jury reached its verdict. So much of this discussion is about "is Derek Chauvin guilty or not?" which, around the time the National Guard to activated and Maxine Waters put out the statement that "things will get worse if he is not found guilty", became less relevant than the question "is the jury going to convict because the evidence shows guilty beyond reasonable doubt or because they will pay dearly for not doing so?"

The fact that this jury trial took place in the county where all the riots had been going on completely eliminates the premise that this was a “fair and unbiased” jury. You didn’t need to know for a fact that there might be mobs after you to know that the had been riots in Minneapolis up to now—although that was very much a possibility—and it is very easy to draw the conclusion that those riots would have escalated had the wrong verdict been passed down.

If Chauvin had been convicted in the complete absence of any kind of threat of intimidation and duress to the jurors, then I’d say “justice has been served”, because to claim, “only a white supremacist would conclude Chauvin wasn’t guilty or that the jurors were threatened, because those claims are mere excuses to let a killer go free” is acting in bad faith.

All of that being said, the direction of this thread and the greater culture at large, raises a bigger problem: we have reached a point where the idea of discourse—that there is common ground where people can come together and say, “alright, I don’t agree with most things you say, but you have some valid points”—is quickly evaporating. It’s no longer about “what makes sense”, it’s about “whose side are you on?”

Yes, cops killing black people disproportionately to white people is bad, even if black people commit more crimes per person than whites. Yes, trying to say that George Floyd’s death was self-inflicted because “he could have just not done drugs” is victim-blaming and not constructive. Every single one of these incidents that resulted in tragedy had a myriad of systemic, unseen complications leading up to them and to attribute the whole of each problem only to what is immediately observed is missing the forest for the trees. We all want there to be a singular reason for these issues, because then it would be easy to solve, and the lack of such succinct, straightforward answers is where much of the strife arises. This strife, in turn, gives rise to cycles of endless political fighting—talking without listening—and is the antithesis of dialogue. Constantly arguing on the basis of party or ideological lines is getting us nowhere fast. For there to be any real progress and unification going forward, this needs to stop.

As Lincoln is quoted as saying “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” Like the man or hate him this quote is valid. We are that utterly-divided house and the support columns are in desperate need of attention and reconstruction, before the whole structure collapses.

On the narrow basis of the evidence, insofar as it can be judged from the perspective outside the jury room, it was a reasonable, if not unambiguously so, verdict. Indeed, the combination of outside pressures - not least the threats of violence that had to have been known by the jury and pronouncements by the likes of the odious Rep. Maxine Waters - and the fact that the jury was not sequestered opens up several avenues of appeal. In that, it is not as clear cut a verdict as it appears.

Such rulings cannot be judged outside the specifics of the case as a matter of law, but the more problematic aspect is what ramifications it will have. The verdict comes at a moment in time when there is a generation that feels itself oppressed and authority something to be opposed. This is apt to reduce the authority of, and respect for, law enforcement. This as crime is already surging across the nation - itself another symptom of the declining respect for the rule of law and law enforcement.

Throw in that much of this case was played out against a backdrop not of a desire for justice, but a desire for vengeance and a thirst for power. It will become the lever by which certain segments of society take power unto themselves and leave the rest of society to take the consequences. Suffice to say, we've been here before.

In the 1960s and 70s the idea gained currency that the criminal was not the perpetrator, but a victim of society's injustices. Law enforcement shifted away from punishment to rehabilitation. Laws were loosened, punishments reduced - and crime accordingly surged such that a Gallup poll taken in the late 1970s found that 77% of all women - across all racial, religious and income lines - reported that they did not feel safe walking in their own neighborhoods alone at night.

The pendulum began to swing again in the 1980s and 1990s, the laws were toughened, and - to no sensible person's great surprise - the crime rate by the early 2000s fell to levels not seen since the peaceful, placid 1950s. Yet society takes such things for granted, forgets what it took to get there, and begins to be offended by what it once deemed necessary to maintain social peace.

The Chauvin trial will thus become the focal point on which a society of people who feel themselves put upon and oppressed. Distrustful of authority and with a feeling of entitlement. So the means by which social peace is maintained will be undermined and the cycle will repeat itself all the more.

The final irony being this. No joke - and I can get sworn testimony to confirm it - when I was no more than 5 years old I can remember my mother saying to my younger brother and I, "If you kids get thrown in jail you can expect to stay there because I won't be bailing you out! Because if you're in jail it means you deserve to be! When a policeman tells you to do something you say, 'Yes, sir!' and you do it!!"

Now we have a generation that is offended because the policeman hurt their "itty bitty wittle feewings," believes that because it was "disrespected" it has the right to take the deepest offense and will thus be inclined to resist arrest. As night follows day, things go wrong and bad things will follow. Rinse and repeat.

A society that feels the law is oppressive simply because it is the law and that is owed respect more than it is obliged to give respect will not be a safe place. The lesson of the Chauvin trial is, frankly, although I would not encourage it, law enforcement should step aside and let the savages run wild and free. That, and that alone, would be condign punishment for the catharsis felt by those who expect no bad consequences for their bad conduct.

Mr. Chauvin got justice, but the irony is that will not conduce to a more just society. Just a more crime ridden self-pitying one.

The main issue I had with this trial is that the prior history of George Floyd was allowed, but Chauvin's prior history was not. Derek Chauvin had a long history of complaints due to excessive force which were swept under the rug with basically a slap on the wrist. This was not an attack on all police, just 1 bad Police officer, Derek Chauvin, he had a long history of being a loose cannon and likely should have been fired long ago. The whole thing comes down to why did a counterfeit $20 bill end up with a man being murdered on video? This is an offense that requires an appearance ticket, not handcuffs, and the question remains, if you used a counterfeit bill, would you still remain outside the store as Mr. Floyd did, or would you leave as soon as possible? And Mr. Floyd did tell the officers that he was claustrophobic and could actually be heard thanking him when they took him out of the Police car. Common practice when a suspect has his hands handcuffed behind his back is having the suspect sitting with his legs forward and crossed at the ankles, so why was he prone on the ground with a knee on his neck for over 9 minutes, with nobody even checking his pulse? I believe justice was served for Mr. Chauvin, and hopefully will also be served for the other 3 former officers involved. The bad thing is that Chauvin will be placed in "protective custody" and checked every 30 minutes, in my mind he should be placed in general population, even convicts have a code of ethics, let him suffer the consequences.

I disagree simply because from the start of the trial to Maxine Waters crying for violence if it wasn't a guilty verdict, and the judge saying that would likely overturn the verdict, there is reasonable doubt on all charges.

The jury had to go back home to violent areas every day after trial, to say there was no pressure or coercion for them to present the verdict they did is ludicrous. He has so many chances for appeal and overturning the verdict that it's ridiculous. If he manages to get into protective custody, solitary, and survive prison long enough to get into court again, he'll get one or all charges dropped/not guilty, then into court again, another charge to all dropped/not guilty.

It's funny all the people saying justice served, but I wonder how many of them would appreciate a trial under coercion. It isn't justice, justice would have been taking this as serious as the situation was instead of rushing a judgement because Antifa and BLM wanted it.

That's alright though, those are problems cities will deal with when it goes to appeal, and they burn again. How many people died during rioting over one person for "justice" that ultimately is pandering.

it took them 10 hours to deliver the verdict. They were quick to decide not out of fear, but because the prosecution was spot on. Any competent prosecutor could have won this case, with the amount of witnesses and expert testimonies that were lined up to testify.

Rushing the judgment? You do know that it was Darren chauvin who chose to waive his right to a speedy trial as is his right under the Constitution. It is not uncommon for cases to play themselves out in court within a year from a crime being committed especially when there's overwhelming evidence that the crime was committed. Your dismissal of the pressure put on the jury is the issue though, it's a common attitude, but that isn't how court works. Regardless, as more trials unfold up north, then more trials and shootings as summer and violence hit together, it's major cities that will have their infrastructure collapse when he goes back to court on appeal and gets even one of his charges dropped or dismissed.

Reasonable doubt, the jury was coerced, whether that is true or not, it sure as hell looks like it as they weren't sequestered or given any protection outside the courthouse during the trial of the decade.

Easier question, would you want to be on that jury for 3 weeks, and feel comfortable at all that likely your information is out there and you're living in a city with rioting and rampant assault with threats of more intense violence if the verdict isn't guilty?

I honestly don't care whether he killed him or not. I care that one death is causing so many more and chaos on a national level, one death is a tragedy, a thousand is a statistic. I care that when this goes to court again, that cycle will renew and intensify. Every time with less cops to protect civilians.

@molly252 Well, let's be honest, the man isn't innocent. He did receive a jacked up trial though. Easiest parallel to this is OJ's trial where they fucked up the trial so badly. His trial will get an appeal or mistrial, and he'll likely be acquitted on all charges because of that. If they had done the trial right, with a sequestered jury, and without politicians getting involved, whatever charges he received would stick without wiggle room. There was ample evidence for that to happen without slanting the trial.

Cops get trained every year on the force, which he worked for 19 years, which is longer than you've been living. Thus, he had 19 years worth of training, so it doesn't sound like a training issue. He didn't get charges because he "hates Black people." He got charged because he kept his knee on the neck of a fully restrained and handcuffed man for ten minutes when he didn't have to. If I did that to you and you died, I would be convicted of murder. Also, Chauvin had 18 complains against him as an officer, but was only disciplined for two, and the owner of the nightclub that he once worked security for described him as racist. Also, it doesn't matter what George Floyd's criminal record was. Just because you committed crimes in the past doesn't mean that police should be allowed to abuse their power against you. Black people also don't commit 90% of crime against other races. Most crime is definitely intraracial. Law enforcement should be focusing on all crimes, regardless of race, not just Black crime. This also includes crimes that police officers commit against citizens.

So a man dies and another is convicted. Why did a man have to kill another man over twenty dollars while handcuffed? 20 dollars! Said I can’t breathe, ego or just didn’t want to let the crowd around have the upper had. Doesn’t matter what someone does in there past if that’s the case let’s look at what both men have done all anyone have brought to the surface is what Floyd has done in his past... wait he can no longer do anything. The THREE verdicts seem like overkill. Why not just convict him on the most serious charge and leave it at that.

I'll give my perspective as someone who has a degree in Criminal Justice. There is no question at all there was enough evidence for a manslaughter conviction. The murder convictions, I'm not sure, because I don't know the Minnesota Penal Code. The force used was excessive, no question about it. I would not be surprised to see the convictions thrown out on appeal, however, and the case have to be retried. There is a question because of political pressure and media coverage as to whether or not Derek Chauvin received a fair trial. There was intense political pressure on the jury from the far left to convict.

Look, I don't have a problem with the outcome. My concern is about the process. I believe everyone has a right to a fair trial, and in this case, I don't see how thar was possible when there was so much public pressure on the jury to convict him. The jurors decision could easily have been influenced for fear of their or their loved one's property being damaged by riots and even personal persecution. So am I happy about the outcome? Yes, because personally I do think Chauvin was guilty. But that isn't my place to say, and I don't want to live in a country where you can't expect a fair and unbiased trial.

I figured the jury spent the 10.5 hours having to decide if he was guilty on all 3 counts or just 1-2, not so much if he was guilty at all, as that seemed like a slam dunk case to me and I watched a lot during work. Hearing the voices of the jury confirming their verdict, it sounded like a well diverse group.

The judge did an overall good job on this case. The prosecution closed it out saying while defense said Floyd's heart was too big, Chauvin's heart was too small.

Well that was covered in the trial. The prosecution brought on the police chief and a "use of force" expert who both said on cross examination that the knee appeared to be on the shoulder from body cam footage and some other pictures from the crowd. And the knee on the shoulder is consistent with police training. People are held like that all the time. But of course the media is only going to show you the worst looking angle.

The use of force expert also pointed out that it was a priority one call. This is the highest call available, meaning chauvin was within his rights to tazer, which is technically lethal force. Instead he chose to conform to what Floyd *demanded* (while resisting arrest) which was to be held on the ground. All of that undermines the notion of excessive force as it demonstrates restraint from chauvin.

Then consider Floyd had lethal concentrations of fentanyl in his system and was consuming more as there was a chewed up speedball with Floyd's DNA on it found in the car.

Between the lethal drugs in Floyd, Chauvin showing restraint, and following the training he was provided, there's no way we can say beyond a *reasonable doubt* that Chauvin can be held responsible as the primary cause of death, nor that he was acting with extreme indifference.

Everyone just saw the original video and jumped to conclusions.

In order to get manslaughter, you have to prove Chauvin was acting in a reckless manner with disregard for life, which is ridiculous because the hold he was using was MPD approved and he followed all policies.

As for the murder charges, 3rd degree murder is shooting a gun into a crowd and hitting and killing a random person in that crowd, completely illegitimate charge in this case. 2nd degree murder is committing a felony level assault and the person dying from it.

None of those things apply here. Chauvin was officiating a perfectly legal arrest and Floyd resisted while being high as a kite on fentynal. The hold was to both subdue Floyd both so he could be taken into custody and for his own safety. The crowd surrounding the arrest scene made it too dangerous for paramedics to get in, which delayed medical attention.

Which, when you think about it is even more sideways that more whites are killed.. You have more encounters with cops with black folks, yet more whites dying. Yet they encounter the cops less.. My point is that it’s poorly trained cops that are the problem, not a problem of “systemic institutional racism” that we have, and of it were addressed honestly and truthfully, we could do more about it. I don’t want anyone to die wrongfully by the cops. Black or white.

So encountering black suspects is more likely to result in violence (from either cop or citizen). Again, my only point is that if attention were drawn to this being a bad cop problem, rather than just making it a racial issue, it would get a lot more mileage.

Yes but why are black people more approached by police? I think for one reason there is more black trash in the inner city locations. When you think of white trash you tend to think the hillbillies that are out in the back woods, which is somewhat correct. While black trash are vast majority of people who live in poor inner city locations. Where do police patrol more? Countryside or city? Cities obviously and thats where the black trash is.

@EyesOfGod good points... Also where white trash live (like my area), it is more sparsely populated. Everyone is more spread out. More densely populated in urban areas. Cop may need to drive around here to find folks when folks are everywhere to encounter in the city.

What Derek Chauvin did was horrible but let's face it George Floyd was a criminal and he even pointed a gun at a pregnant woman , if he was an innocent person I would have understood but I dont find anything wrong in killing criminals.

No, point a gun at someone does NOT carry the death penalty. It is aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, it carries about 15 years in most states. But seeing as how he wasn’t point a gun at anyone, it’s a rather moot point.

Kneeling on someone’s neck until they die, that carries the death penalty in most states.
