It's good that so many of you have posted.
Now here's my opinion:
I think they split because of the love or family reasons.
I don't agree with people saying it was for monetary reasons. Really? Money cannot be the problem.
It might also be a possibility that they did for some other purpose? Some legal binding?

Bill and I have mutual friends, people who I've lost track of but I heard a bit about the wedding and their relationship. My bet is that Bill is just finally sick of being told what to do. She changed him a lot, how he dresses, what he drives I think he's probably just old enough he no longer cares what the public thinks and wants to go back to his old ways, she's not having anything to do with it and that's that.

It’s possible he always wanted to divorce her but did not want to lose half his assets so he put up with the marriage until he could not take it anymore. I know a lot of unhappy guys who stay married for financial reasons or for the benefits of the children involved.

one of them or both found someone else. There is no other reason to divorce as they will still work professionally and they both always had access to money so it only makes sense to me that the reason is that they want to get involved with someone else

I think being both so rich they found they need something to add value to their lives. Breaking up and seeing where the single life takes them was tempting.

Same the reason women file 70% of divorces. Because women profit monetarily from divorce, and Melinda saw her opportunity to divorce Bill, take $ billions of his money and start a new life without the man she committed to spend her life with.

So....she waited 27 years....???? He's been a billionaire for quite some time. If her motive were purely financially, she could have cut and run at any point long before this. I mean once someone is a billionaire in the plurals, it's not like you can't live the lifestyle you're accustomed to with even 1 billion in a divorce settlement. I mean this is a woman who allowed Bill Gates to continue seeing his ex girlfriend on vacations every year by himself and Gates has admitted in interviews, there was always a struggle to spend time with her and their kids. No matter how rich you are, no one wants to be in a relationship with a shadow.
