Is it ethical to give a Razzie to a child?

The Razzie Awards certainly took some razzing this week after it nominated 12-year-old Firestarter star Ryan Kiera Armstrong for Worst Actress. Today the head of the group behind the Golden Raspberry Awards offered an apology.

Responding to the widespread uproar over the nom, the Razzies’ John Wilson said: “Sometimes, you do things without thinking, Then you are called out for it. Then you get it. It’s why the Razzies were created in the first place.”

It's wrong.

It's important to remember that children are still developing their skills and abilities, and it's not fair to compare them to adult actors with more experience. It's important to be sensitive and supportive of children who are trying to learn and grow in their craft. Positive reinforcement and constructive feedback can be much more beneficial than criticizing or making fun of their performance. Additionally, it's essential to consider the impact that a negative critique or award may have on a child and their future career. It's not only important to think about the effect of the present but also the future.

Henry Winkler once made an absolutely awful, horrendously bad movie called “The One and Only.” I described it as “the worst movie ever made without Brooke Shields.” Brooke was a minor when she made most of her stinkers, so I might be guilty of the same thing.

That's terrible. Everything children do should be celebrated with unqualified enthusiasm. Any form of criticism could make them mentally ill.

Kids want to be treated like adults, so yes it is fine to do that especially if she really sucked.

I watched it a few months ago. I didn't think she sucked but the movie sure did. 'Twas an unnecessary reboot.

Yeah but she’s a 12 year old. Still extremely young and developing.

This could go in two ways for her. She might get angry and more motivated to improve her acting OR it might devastate her and she will quit.

But there had to be plenty of adult actors who were close seconds for the razzy award they could have given this to. You take it as a joke, insult or motivation to improve. But a 12 year old is less likely to respond well to that.
