Why would any parent forcibly shave their kid as a punishment?

I'm still upset about it. My hair just recently reached the length it was when my dad shaved it all off in some stupid power play before I left. I shouldn't have told him I wasn't coming back. Maybe he wouldn't have panicked and I could have gotten out the door. At least when I was young, he was only erasing a few months of hair at most. He ended up cracking one of my ribs the last time too, but that also only took a couple months to heal. It took me 2 years of being obedient and nice and really careful to grow my hair out that long the last time though, and then he just erased all that at the last second. I would rather die homeless than even hear his voice ever again.

It doesn't work like a punishment either, but that doesn't stop some parents from threatening or doing it.

I'm pretty sure my dad once threatened to shave my head when I was a teen but boy I was scared to death.

"Too long" for what? If it's a hygiene issue then that's not a punishment, that's just taking care of them. Although I'd hope a parent would want their kid to be able to take care of their own hair when they grow up, no matter what length they keep it.
