NBC NEWS---NASA will call on SpaceX to bring home two astronauts who have been stuck on the International Space Station since early June after their Boeing spacecraft ran into several problems midflight, the agency said Saturday. The decision for astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to hitch a ride back to Earth on a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, rather than on the Boeing Starliner spacecraft that they rode into orbit, puts to rest months of speculation and tension within the space agency over how — and when — the two crew members could safely return. The mission was planned to last about eight days. 
 
 Wilmore and Williams will remain at the space station for about six more months before [hopefully] flying home in February.

i'm not so much concerned about the time stuck there it's probably gonna be just more of the same if i already had been there for some time. i'd be more concerned about the severe health implications of that.

I can later say that I also celebrated my birthday (in February) in the ISS, orbiting Earth.

It's the journey to & from outer space that I'm afraid of.

Here's how I know.

Last year, I had to have a brain MRI to see if I had a pituitary gland tumor. (I didn't.) So, for about 45 minutes with a loud clicking noise and my head locked still, I had to be surrounded by a giant doughnout maybe an inch from my head and face. I am a bit claustrophobic and need to feel free to move. Yet, in this case, it was imperative that I be still. So, I closed my eyes and just thought... I was able to get through that OK.

So, I could probably do the same thing. Besides, the ISS is not small; each module may be a bit cramped, but you do get to move about among the modules.

Not a surprise that Space X will be doing the collection, NASA will be tightening up on organisations who believe they can operate in space. Obviously Musk will maximise this, while I can’t stand the fuckwit, Space X is a good programme. As for me being able to handle 6-8 months there, yes not really a hardship, you get to do some work, decent office with a lovely view.
There is supposed to be a new space logistics hub being built for the Mars missions, that one I believe will be the harder one as it’s supposed to be at the limit for a station.

Space missions are always very risky and this was a test flight. There is a reason why astronauts are so rigorously trained because anything can go wrong. See the 90s movie Apollo 11 to a see a realistic story of what can happen in space.

People are joking about this but I don’t think it’s a joke to their families. 6 months in a space station isn’t like 6 months in Cancun. I imagine being at zero gravity for that much time can have major dire impacts on these two both mentally and physically.

Praying that that the spaceX alternative is a success.

It’s not the duration that would bitter me as I’d be trained to endure it. Rather the fact these unexpected problems occur that I did not anticipate and once I’m concerned the machinery is faulty… well I’ve surprise hey Ira’s to another. The uncertainty of newer larger calamity -rather than the waiting with a set return date- would bother me.

i imagine the feeling of being launched at that speed is probably horrific.

I'd have no choice and find a way. They are professionals, but I wouldn't go up in first place... nor would I go to bottom of ocean in some dudes garage project.

Gotta wonder why our technology has seems to have gone backwards. We landed people on the moon supposedly...55 years ago.

Butch and Suni are trained astronauts, and both have been in space before. They knew that a test flight may not go as planned. They can handle it.
