The dockworkers union has agreed to only a 62% raise over 6 years. If Harris get elected it will barely cover the oncoming inflation.

The union president said that when they signed their last contract 4 years ago they had no idea that Joe Biden would touch off the worst inflation in over 40 years and their finances have been in the dumpster ever since. I guess they are just preparing for the worst. I cannot say I blame them.

This is why you need to push back against companies. I don't see why some people have such a hard time understanding why unions are necessary. There will always be pressure to lower salaries, save money when it comes to benefits, working conditions, safety, overtime etc. because people are making money off that. Investors and executives make more money when they pay employees less.

If you only have pressure in one direction it's not very hard to see where things will end. People always pretend unions are the most radical thing imaginable no they're just the counter balance to corporate greed which never takes a break, never sleeps, never ends, so unions have to push back just as strongly or they're constantly giving ground which is pretty much what has happened.

What unions are actually getting for workers is only a small percentage of what workers should actually be getting. If you factor inflation in wages have basically been flat for 20 years but everything else keeps going up. But the media and business owners have people so well trained that there's actually people attacking unions for causing them an inconvenience. You can't make this shit up.

I will never understand people who think like this. People who are so used to losing when they see someone who's actually fighting back and getting results they start to hate them and want to tear them down.

This reminds me of premier league fans who are so used to getting dominated by Manchester City who broke financial rules to assemble their team. Instead of hating them they hate Arsenal because they are actually putting up a fight and have a chance to win the title. It's pathetic but that was a random sidetracked thought don't mind it XD

The longshoreman's union was smart to stage a strike a month before the election. A strike would cause the prices of everything to skyrocket because goods would have to be shipped via air freight. The democrats are already behind on the most important thing to Americans which is the economy and inflation. This would make the situation much worse and serve as a reminder what the liberal policies of the democrats have touched off the worst inflation in over 40 years.

If I recall where I work we got about 12% over 4 years on our last contract. by the end of this contract I'm not going to make anywhere near what those guys make now let alone after they get a 62% raise.

The US. inflation has fallen July to August from 2,9 to 2,5%. And with Saudi Arabia‘s announcement to produce more oil, it will get a further dent. Stop being such a whiny, misinformed drama queen.

But 62% isn't much, when you consider most are on terrible minimum wages and have been for decades. Some dockworkers will start at about 20 bucks up to about 40 bucks after 4 years. Take away tax and costs, and they're getting a lot less than that.

All while company bosses have seen something like 100-200% spikes in profit over those same decades. With some paying very little tax, and getting all sorts of bonuses on top of wages.

This is why you need a union and organize. Nobody can do electrical work without a license and if everyone with a license is in a union which sets the prices you have the whole state over a barrel.

There is the local 3 and 25 electrical union. If you get hired by the union, you have to shelf your license and work under them. The union electricians do really shitty work

FYI, the largest raise I ever got in my career, ignoring increases due to promotions, was 3.2% in one year.

@DrPepper12 nope they create conditions that those employed are basically forced to quit, then take on fewer replacements. So they aren't firing anyone so no redundancies. They call it natural wastage.

Yeah, I know. A bunch of them live in the neighborhood where I work. Also went to school with a bunch of kids who's dads were longshoremen. They always had the best cars out of the parents, the kids always had the best bikes and then cars in high school
