Some Amazon workers have chosen to go on strike a week before Christmas.

Amazon drivers went on strike in four states across the country with less than a week to go before Christmas – but the company is saying it’s not going to affect your holiday deliveries.

Members of the Teamsters union are striking at seven facilities across four states, and even though the Teamsters claim to represent 7,000 Amazon workers nationwide, that accounts for less than 1% of the company’s US workforce.

Beyond the usual labor complaints about wages and benefits, however, is that Amazon disputes that they’re Amazon employees at all, despite wearing Amazon vests, driving Amazon vans, and exclusively delivering Amazon packages.

“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,” said Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien, in a statement posted on X.

“We are struggling and fighting for basic benefits and needs that are otherwise an industry standard,” said driver Luke Cianciotto speaking to reporters outside the Skokie facility just before the start of the strike there. “Many of us, we don’t have any Christmas presents under the tree this year. The wages and hours we get working for Amazon simply aren’t enough to get by in today’s economy.”

I mean look, clearly their employees who get mistreated by automated robotics pushing bear spray into the ventilation system (happened on numerous occasions in warehouses, one in New Jersey a few years back), overworked, under paid, no paid sick leave, having to pee inside a portable urine container / bucket at their work station since the employee restroom is too far away & they get reduction of pay for every restroom break, etc. they carefully targeted one week before Christmas so the last minute Christmas gifts get sabotaged in order for Amazon to give them some more benefits that they deserve.

Unions are strong when the people come together as a community invoking better conditions. The 5 day work week came from Unions for crying out loud. Do we need a reminder that the fire code for buildings was implemented because of employers not having fire escapes that worked / failed to have a way for employees to extinguish the fire leading to innocent worker deaths in this country? Look up Triangle Shortwaist Fire and other fires because it took death, injuries, mismanagement, and Unions to get us to where we are today. Fuck Jeff Bezos.

Fuck the unions, and especially fuck the Teamsters. If they don't like their job, they can get another one.

The antiquated pro-union laws in the US should be overhauled. When those workers go on strike, every last one of them should be fired.

I guess they didn't learn their lesson from UPS. A number of years ago UPS was highly dominant in the delivery business. Nobody else came close. But when UPS workers went on strike and got themselves a big raise, what happened? They were no longer as competitive and Fed-Ex stepped in and took the lead. That was a HUGE fall for UPS.

The Amazon CEO and other major higher ups get paid by the millions to only pay workers chump change.

Strategically good time for demands. Of course it's bad for customers when Amazon workers strike but CEO and shareholders can drive deliver trucks and work on sorting machines if they don't want yo pay proper wages.

Strikes are stupid. If a company isn't willing to pay you what you want or provide the benefits you think you deserve for the job they are asking you to perform, then go work for another company or start your own. Let the company fail by just not working for them or purchasing their products. The reality is, if people will not work for what the company is asking, either the company will offer more to attract talent, or go out of business if what they are doing is an unprofitable endeavor. When you apply for a job, you know what you are getting yourself into by the job advertisement and the interview. If a company can't acquire labor or they have massive turnover, they know they need to pay more. Striking means you are happy with your job and are willing to stay, so there is no real reason to accommodate your demands. You just need a vacation to blow off some steam before you go back to work.

Amazon is a business like any other. They have systematically and methodically dominated a market. Enriched their shareholders and now significantly reduced their services now that they have dominated the market. I feel no sympathy for the company. Obviously the leverage is greatest now for a union. It's a good business move for the union. The fact that it might inconvenience me neither the company or the union care about that and I'm not going to lose sleep about it.

I wish I could get the whole story instead of just random yelling from union members. Amazon claims that the Teamsters are not representing the workers at those locations, and there is ongoing lawsuit. Amazon has hundreds of warehouses so it's no big deal if a handful are not running at full capacity.

1# All full time positions at any job are required by law to give you basic benefits.

2# If nothing has been said or done by now then it means one of two things they either don't give a shit about your strike or they haven't even noticed.

3# If things at your job are that bad then I'm of the opinion that you should be looking for a new job.

I’m not surprised, they go through employees so fast and have a high turnover rate due to inadequate management. Not only do they overwork their employees but they refuse to allow them enough time for bathroom/meal breaks. I once saw an Amazon guy peeing in his van and keeping it in a container.

people are gonna be kicked out and replaced. that's what amazon does. amazon workers largely aren't unionized and amazon has pretty much the largest work force fluctuation of all big companies. plus amazon jobs often require little to no education or training, so finding replacement is super easy.
