Why are there no new oil refineries being built?

The last refinery was built in Louisiana in 1976. Several were closed during the Biden Administration.

The switch to electric vehicles was a flop and we will be pumping more oil out of the ground than anyone has ever pumped. We need to build refineries to process all this oil or else it will have to be shipped to foreign countries for processing.

It was a mistake to allow vital industries to be shipped overseas. Exporting industries like semiconductors, prescription medication and gasoline and heating oil needs to be reversed not only to provide good jobs but for national security.

The market hasn't required it. Average gas mileage has increased a lot since the 1970s and even though there are more vehicles, the need for gas has not increased that much. If there was a need for more refineries, the Petro companies would have built them.

It would be less expensive and more environmentally sound if we could refine the oil here instead of sending it to Canada and then they send it back here making a major spill much more likely.

@exitseven I don't think Canada refines any US oil. I do know Canada ships lots of oil to the US to be refined.

Not fake. It will. Tariff on oil is 10% (instead of 25%) to reduce the price shock to Americans. US exports its oil while it imports and refines Canadian oil. Canada imports gasoline and refined oil back from the US because Canada doesn’t have enough refining capacity or pipelines, which run North to South rather than East to West. Keep in mind, this situation was orchestrated over decades by Americans who already owned most of Canada’s oil production.

Yes, that is probably right. We get our gas from Canada. It is ridiculous that we can pump oil here and have to sent it to Canada to process it and than they send it back here. I imagine that oil refineries have a lot of good payin g jobs.

That’s not correct. It’s the other way around. Actually, the US is already sufficient for oil production (since Obama) and is a net exporter of oil. Not sure it’s the same for natural gas though.

Also, the electricity comes from oil, it's just burned at a power plant, instead of the street, and into children's faces via car exhausts.

The regulatory requirements, and then if approved, the cost, won’t just the investment. It has nothing to do with adoption of electric vehicles.

It's going to be interesting to have US oil refined in Canada and subjected to tariffs when it crosses the border into Canada and then back into the US

Oil refineries are dirty, polluting. and expensive to build and maintain. Nobody wants to lower the price of oil by refining more of it. The [rice of US crude right now is $68.29–$68.46 / barrel. Barely profitable.

There are new technologies that can pump oil for less money. I read someplace that you can make money at 50 bucks a barrel. sending it away for processing and then sending it back to the US adds a lot of money to the final product.

So if that is correct, you make it at 50 bucks a barrel, retain the same prices at the pump, and pocket the excess profit. Surely you don't think the oil companies would pass the profit on to consumers?
