Unlike Trump, I don’t think Ford’s going to be wishy washy… Ontario has already pulled US alcohol off the shelves. Most Canadian provinces have followed suit. No tariffs, just, fuck you!

Trudeau even said himself that Canada can’t survive a trade war with the U. S. they need our dollars. What everyone seems to be ignoring is that Trump is not imposing tariffs for no reason. All these countries have tariffs on us. As an example the U. S. can’t sell milk to Canada because there is tariffs on U. S. milk so that it can’t compete with Canada milk… is that fair? Trump just wants fair.
If we had fair trade then American jobs would do better and we would be exporting more. All good for America. But Canada doesn’t want to do what’s good for America only what’s good for Canada.

I don’t think that’s what Trudeau said. Actually, he said it would be devastating, for both sides, and speculated it was a strategy to weaken, an admittedly much smaller economy, to facilitate annexation. As for milk, that was negotiated, by Trump, in the USMCA. But milk is also a localized, and perishable commodity. Transportation cost will always be the major price factor. American milk is also subject to less health & safety requirements and contains more antibiotics and hormones. Given the choice, most Americans would (or should) prefer Canadian milk, but I guarantee one could walk into any major grocery store in any major Canadian city and buy American milk, if they wanted to. I defy you to the say the same about Canadian milk in the US. Trump may want to increase domestic production, but he certainly does not want to export more, and tariffs guarantee that will never happen. For decades Republicans believed in supply-side economics and touted free trade around the world, because there was a belief that competition and freedom were good for America and everyone else. I think it’s you that needs to learn more facts, not just what you hear on conservative media…

Who? And lose what exactly? Canada won the first time (the USMCA is a laughable act of narcissistic masturbation). If Canada becomes more independent, like the US says it wants to become through all this silliness, they will become stronger than they’ve ever been. For example, Canadian interprovincial trade barriers have been valued by Canadian economists at $200bn, and act as a subsidy to the US by diverting Canadian trade North-South rather than East-West. According to the USTR, the so-called trade deficit with Canada is $65bn. In contrast, Trump’s $25% tariff against Canada would be valued at ~$100bn. Those interprovincial trade barriers have come down faster in the past month than at any other time in Canadian history, suggesting Canada has an opportunity to significantly offset the impact from US tariffs through domestic trade. Canada also has more free trade agreements than the US, including with Europe, who are also being forced to become less reliant on the US. In the meantime, US refiners need Canadian oil; US farmers, Canadian potash: the US nuclear industry, Canadian uranium; US builders, Canadian lumber; and the list goes on. The only way Canada loses in the long-run is US annexation/invasion. Is anyone really being serious about that yet? And what would that say about America? Freedom? I think not.

So just two hours after ranting about retaliation, Trump caved. Ford suspended the provincial surcharge pending further discussions. Canada proceeded with the first tranche of retaliatory tariffs, valued at ~$30bn, with more to follow as US tariffs go live. All to say, Trump and Lutnick look like disorganized idiots. First Round: 🇨🇦
