That's what it would have taken to avoid the stabbing incident of Karmelo Anthony, recently found guilty of murder. I could, but many I know, could not.
SUMMARY FROM AI:
Altercation: track event was delayed due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Anthony, sought shelter under a team tent belonging to [another school], which Austin Metcalf attended. Metcalf and his twin brother asked Anthony to leave the tent. Anthony was asked to leave as many as 15 times over a two-minute period.
The Escalation: An argument ensued during which Anthony verbally insulted the students and allegedly warned, "Touch me and see what happens," while reaching into his backpack. Metcalf stood up and pushed or grabbed Anthony to remove him from the tent. Anthony then pulled a five-inch black knife from his backpack and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest.
Outcome: Metcalf died short time later.
...
Easy solution: be nice, let him stay, talk... De-escallation skills. Beyond that... Anthony would have had to swallow pride and run in a storm.
I'll call out AA history..."black people"... I've seen this pride in many, possiby part of culture? don't mess with it.
The solution to that is humility training, growing up, wisdom... but that is found in few places, not easily managed in teens.
We need a "higher calling" to guide us imho.

It is possible, this judgement was wrong.
