I've locked in my oil price hedge for this coming winter at $2.849 per gallon. Had my 500 gallon tank filled today. Current spot market prices are $5.20 to $5.58 per gallon under the brilliant leadership of the Orange Buffoon. If you're not locked in with a hedge, you're probably screwed. So what's your plan?

So what's your plan? Long underwear and a MAGA sweatshirt, set the thermostat to 45F? Pay through the nose? Hope for the best? Try to cross the border into Mexico?

I filled up in July. 500 gallons for $4 per. I've got two generators ready for the winter and heat pumps and other heaters. Probably going with natural gas next year.
Had the house reinsulated with some new modern stuff 2 years ago and at one point I had to open the windows to let the heat out as it was 75F and no heating on.
I worked it out and I think I may actually be saving as much as 50% on heating costs due to the insulation. Thats if people would leave the thermostat alone.

I moved to SE Asia this year but for the previous 5 years I lived in Northern Canada and my electricity and gas heating were combined on one bill and never topped $250 ($180USD).
not like we used to get extreme temperatures like that, but even so... we don't get real winters anymore

LP in my area is more a product of corn moisture content than anything. A dry fall typically means lower prices. I've forgone the contract the last two winters and ended up paying less per gallon in Jan/Feb.

Yup, same archaic fuel source as the UK, fossil fuels. Same price volatility. Only with natural gas you're pumping an explosive and deadly gas into your home. Oil is a lot safer.
Natural gas is the most common fuel source in the USA too. But the Northeast, the oldest part of the country, rocky hills and mountains, lacks the infrastructure for gas distribution outside of major urban / suburban areas. So we hang onto liquid fuels.
I'm the type to have windows open during winter so shrugs. If it gets too cold I have blankets and a gaming set up which will heat the room fairly because I live in a pretty efficient new build flat. I doubt I'll ever use my heaters but will have to see as this be a recent move in.
But considering I used to live in much colder shitty rented place that kept not heat and was falling apart I somehow think I'll be fine

There are some AC types who work for both for cooling and heating. I have one.
No you don't. You have a heat pump. A very different device that can reverse the direction of thermal energy flow on demand. Heat pumps lose efficiency fast in sub freezing weather. And they run on electricity. They make little sense in cold climates with high electric rates. And they are slooooow. You cannot turn down the heat all day then come home at 7PM and turn it back up. It will take a heat pump 6 hours to raise the house back to comfort levels. An oil based forced hot air system will do that in 20 min.

Depends on where you are very few people in New England use heat pumps. Too cold and electric rates are too high.
