1.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Just the word "oil" makes me think of ⬆️ $$$. Every year people in America freeze to death in the winter as you know. I really don't think they care if your heating oil increases - it's all about money anymore.
I don't know a thing about heating oil or how or where you get it from. I am thinking there might be some kind of discount program you could get in. Since you are not working, there may be a discount?
My apartment building does not provide heat for me. So I had to buy some electric space heaters. They have seen them, and so they think I have heat 🤬. By law they are supposed to have heat in my apartment. I just don't want to go up against them. They are so hateful to the residents.
Good luck with your heating bill. Hope it works out for you!111 Reply- +1 y
@exitseven to me, 58° would be brutally cold and I would freeze to death. How much were your heating bills at 58°? Man, it must be freezing temps where you live. I love the winters here - sunshine and nice temps.

@sage2021 I wear a hoodie and I have some heavy socks because my feet used to get cold. I got a new high efficiancy furnace and I had my insulation upgraded. The power company offered a no interest loan for the furnace. I paid 70 bucks a month for 4 years. and saved so much in heating oil that it was like I got it for free. They had a subsidy for the insulation too. I got $3000 worth of insulation for $300 bucks. The house is vert efficiant. I go through three tanks a heating season. I try to take my showers at the gym so I don;t use all that hot water too.

@exitseven you got a high efficiency boiler and your going through 3 tanks a season at 58°? That's not very efficient.
- +1 y
@Sparkie460 well it is really not fillups. I have automatic delivery and usually the delivery is about a hundred gallons. This year I really tried to save oil. I lowered the thermostat and took most of my showers at the gym.
The boiler really is a lot more efficient. I noticed it the first year I had it. It was a lot more efficiant and it is really quiet too. I di a lot of research before I bought it. My house was built at about the same time as the other houses on this street. I was the only one that still had the original boiler so I knew it was only a matter of time. - +1 y
I personally don't like automatic delivery. I can Guage my usage better when I call up myself. My friend who's a plumber replaced my boiler. He gave me this top of the line European boiler that is 98 percent efficient foragreatdeal. I have gone 6 months on 250 gallons.

@Sparkie460 I bought one made in USA.
- +1 y
I was kind of upset when he said it wasn't American made but I like the savings.
- +1 y
@Sparkie460 The best time to buy a new boiler is before you need one. I ended up with this one

I have had it for 12 years already. - +1 y
@exitseven Thank you for the MHO 🙂

+1 yWe don't use heating oil here, but if people can't afford to heat their homes with propane or natural gas, the national forests are going to start getting chopped down. People won't give a damn about permits or anything. They'll just go get wood to build fires to stay warm.
Almost all of us here, have a dual propane/natural gas or wood burning stoves. Seems a fuel shortage could increase pollution cause burning wood is way worse than propane or natural gas pollution wise.
Essentially people won't care what the laws say, when they are trying to survive.38 Reply- +1 y
Especially since jails provide free heat. Lol.
- +1 y
@Jamie05rhs yup, 3 hots and a cot.
- +1 y
@Jamie05rhs Yeah but right now, the forest service only gets a small percentage of people illegally chopping down anyways, but imagine how overwhelmed they would be potentially in this situation.

@Aerissa_Jade You'll have to coordinate the assault with other choppers. Lol
They'll be running all over the place playing Whack-A-Mole just like the Border Patrol. 😆 - +1 y
And @exitseven Yep!
- +1 y
@exitseven They'll be doing catch and release, no room... lol. Forest service doesn't have their own jail, have to contract with the country who may refuse them... it wouldn't be the first time, that federal law enforcement tries to book someone and they are rejected.

@exitseven eh, that's my backyard... with elm though, I have 50 or so elm trees and one giant 100 year old oak... branches always falling all over the place but come winter, that wouldn't last more than a week or two tops to burn. Its windy right now, so probably end up with a ton more dead or broken branches all over by tomorrow.
I cut down some of these Elm before, and god they burn slow and hot... very dense.

+1 yI live in the South now so winters are not hat cold, and we mostly heat with gas, so no supply of, or expensive, heating oil wouldn't be a problem.
I grew up in the North though and I know that many homes are heated with oil, so that would be a hardship. Hopefully, people wouldn't use their fireplaces to heat the house by burning wood. From personal experience in the North, many chimneys are caked in creosote, haven't been maintained, and could easily burn the house down.
Maybe Biden could get lucky on his visit to Saudi Arabia and petroleum prices might drop to acceptable levels. What am I saying.. that's not going to happen.21 Reply

+1 yis that theory or possibility?
Rich people don't like it when it's cold in their huge houses.
an increase in wood burning furnaces.03 Reply- +1 y
I put in a wood burning stove years ago. A lot of my neighbors did. The whole neighborhood stunk as a result. It is not like a fireplace. The wood burns slowly at lower temperatures and the chimney does not have as powerful of a draft so the smoke just lingers in the air. The wood burning furnces are just as bad.
- +1 y
@exitseven. Does your stove have a catalytic converter?
- +1 y
@KrakenAttackin no, it just has a stainless steel vent pipe that goes up my chimney. It also has an electric fan

They are great. I got hoodie that has battery powered heating elements in it. Keeps me warm when I work outside in the cold weather
- +1 y
@Sparkie460 Now if they only had one with an air conditioner attached to keep you cool on those 100 degree days..
- +1 y
@Daniela1982 yes that would be awesome. I'd definitely buy it.
- +1 y
@daniela1982 they do
- +1 y
@sandandwavesThat is not for hot climes. All it would do is blow hot air at you as it has no ability to actually cool you. When it is 100 degrees out it can't blow any air on you that is less than 100 degrees.
+1 yThere are tons of seniors on fixed incomes who could not bear high heating costs. As it is now I have heard of people freezing to death because they couldn't afford to heat their houses. I would hope the government would help them out. And don't forget all the homeless too.

@daniela1982. The government CAUSED this problem.

+1 yYeah, we could have a shortage to heat our homes with gas furnaces, the same people heat with oil furnaces might have a shortage of oil, this is a shady thing to think of we have seniors who live at home, people with children, college people in dorms, hey I could be wrong?
10 ReplyWinter is a big deal. Cold people are angry people; angrier than drivers paying $6 per gallon for gasoline.

+1 yFuel oil was 5.25 a gallon when we got it 2 months ago. If there's a shortage I'll use diesel fuel if I have to. I've been thinking about converting my heating to propane. It might happen sooner than later
