UK winter energy blackouts: When could they happen and how would they work?

Winter blackouts could be imposed on British households during very cold days between 4pm and 7pm if the country is unable to import enough gas from Europe, the National Grid’s chief executive has warned.

John Pettigrew said the blackouts could happen in January and February and would be the result of gas supplies from Europe being insufficient due to the war in Ukraine. About half the energy on the grid comes from gas.

However, the grid could put coal-power power stations on standby and reward customers for shifting their energy use to offpeak times to reduce demand during critical periods. It is said the grid’s “base case” was still that it would be able to meet UK demand.

When asked by Sky News whether Britain could face blackouts or rationing, climate and energy minister Graham Stuart said earlier this month: “We don’t expect that to occur. That’s not our expectation at all.

“But you have seen all sorts of things happening in recent weeks and we plan for all eventualities and the public should be confident that we have a very strong and diverse supply, that we have taken all the steps to look after our needs for this winter.”
