Why are Americans drinking less alcohol than ever before?

[exitseven]

Everyone smokes weed instead

Donald Trump is president

Law Enforcement is aggressively arresting drunk drivers

People are more health conscious

With gas over 4 bucks a gallon people cannot afford it

I'm too drunk to answer this question

Let's see what Gemini AI says...

Why Drinking Habits Are Changing

Shifting Health Views: A record-majority of Americans now see even moderate daily drinking as a health risk. Public health warnings regarding cancer, sleep disruption, and liver disease have altered public perception.
Economic Pressures: Inflation has made going out for drinks significantly more expensive. Many consumers treat alcohol as a discretionary expense and choose to cut back to save money.
Generational Change: Younger adults, including Gen Z and Millennials, lead the decline. They place a higher value on mental clarity, fitness, and morning energy over traditional drinking routines.
Alternative Products: The explosive growth of the non-alcoholic beverage market provides sophisticated mocktails and zero-proof beers that make socializing easy without alcohol. Additionally, legal cannabis access and popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications have contributed to diminished cravings for alcohol in certain groups.

Thanks for MHO

[Iron_Man]

Because your favorite president of all time doesn’t drink any alcohol and the people take notice and want to do the same thing

[exitseven]

did not think of that.

[Iron_Man]

Well now you know great 👍🏻

[shish_kebab]

Exit must have added the poll after your suggestion, Iron. 😋

[Iron_Man]

@shish_kebab good

[shish_kebab]

It was good for you to suggest it. I don't think I would have thought of that.

[Iron_Man]

@shish_kebab thank you my friend

[Iron_Man]

Thank you for the award, my friend. I appreciate it.

Could be a bit of all of those answers, but i think there could be a major underlying factor that people aren’t seeing.
I’m willing to bet that bars were a major gateway for people to meet. It has become prohibitively risky for men to meet women anywhere, most of all in bars. Women have become less interested in meeting the majority of men, and that’s all they find in bars, common men. They have turned to the internet to get their attention. Men have turned to the internet to find some semblance of connection with women. None of which requires the introduction of alcohol, or benefits greatly from it. Not to mention that alcohol makes the lows feel even lower. All these desperately lonely and sad individuals might be avoiding alcohol to cut down on the number of times they sob themselves to sleep.
I think people are drinking less because of the huge and growing wedge between the sexes. Plus more than a little of several of the reasons you’ve listed. It is expensive. It is unhealthy. People have found other outlets and vices. Pot is widely available. Gambling is up. Onlyfans is huge. Social media addiction is all but universal. And maybe most relevant of all, the distance between men and women is growing with no signs of slowing down. Let alone stopping or reversing.

[FreyaRed]

Option 1, alcohol doesn't bring a euphoria kick anymore
Option 2, they just switched to """home made""" products from uncle Jim who burns moonshine in the woods
Option 3, Armageddon is coming following by Ragnarök.

Probably the same reason as in the UK, culture change. One time everyone went to the pub at lunchtime, then had one after work before driving home for tea then taking the wife to the pub.

But now companies frown upon liquid lunches and pubs are too expensive to drink 6 pints a night. People no longer feel the need to drink to fit in, guys aren't getting labelled pooftas if they order a coke instead of a beer. You're more likely to go to the pub for a meal these days than to drink loads of beer.

We've went from the guy who can knock back 8 pints and still drive home being admired as a "real man" to seeing him as having a drink problem.

[GothEgg]

A change in culture perhaps. Maybe people drinking at home more as bar prices are too expensive.

Social media, nobody wants to end up on social media doing or saying something stupid.

Obesity. Obese people drink less. Om sure this correlates over the last 20 years with consumption of alcohol lowering and the rates of obesity rising.

[shish_kebab]

It's probably the affordability factor. I don't think people realize that with a little yeast and some sugar you can make hooch out of just about anything. Including water!

[NathanDavis]

alcohol in excess was always stupid...

but now... people are a different kind of stupid

overpriced coffee for example... or that green thing that tastes like grass

[Anonymous]

wide variety of reasons i guess , people have less disposable income these days due to gas prices and food inflation , who has money to go to a bar or a high price restaurant. i know restaurants here where 1 draft beer , yes 1 draft beer is $15 plus tax and tip so $20 for 1 draft beer , like does that even make sense.

I gave up drinking 25 years ago. I am amazed at what it costs.

[lilBigPotato]

I have no clue, the only thing I can exclude is more health conscious, given all the fast food that is so popular.

[ProbablyClueless]

It’s expensive and doesn’t do anything good for your health.

[Stone_30]

Because I'm already an overthinker, drink will make it worse for me

[moddy_the_mod]

they're too hopped up on adderal.

[jahaims]

Health reasons and increased thc use

[Jeff51]
