Now, we all worry about first impressions in some way; Agreed? Okay, so how is that we can take the idea of a first impression and ease our minds of how to go about them? Well, what is an impression, first of all:

(NOUN):
1. An effect, feeling, or image retained as a consequence of experience.

2. A vague notion, remembrance, or belief: I have the impression that we have met once before.

3. A humorous imitation of the voice and mannerisms of a famous person done by an entertainer.

These definitions deal with human impressions. Now, if you want to make a funny first impression, go for the 3rd definition, but that may come in later. Now we all get ready, and prepare for a first impression while our appearance is at hand, but how many of us really go out of our way to leave an intellectually lasting impression, versus a presentable outward appearance of an impression. I try to mix it up, if I'm able to.

Now sometimes, you may have your first conversation with somebody without even being able to see them, no appearance necessary. So you had to rely on your wits, and conversation skills. If it was over the internet, then your writing and conversation skills may come into play, as well as how fast and developed you are at those skills. But like anything, the more you do it, practice, put yourself in the uncomfortable position - then the more prepared you are for when the situation arises.

However, if it was your first encounter - first time making a first impression and nerves set in, that's where the advice of friends and acquaintances, well, you can ask them for advice on what kind of impression they get from how you present yourself. Another trick (and shhhh, I didn't tell anyone, lol); If you're nervous about what kind of impression you want to make, get dressed in a way that you want to present yourself and go to a florist, flower shop - and ask the lady (I'm assuming, usually there is one woman in all of the local flower shops near me) about if a flower is necessary for the date or whatever, then just open up to them a little; ask her "So... how do you think my date will react? Is this trying too hard, not enough?" I say this because they have seen people in the "nervous-first-impression-makers" shoes, and advised them before. And buy a flower anyway, as a tip. And if you can find someone around your age to help you in the flower shop, that may be a little better. (And I didn't forget about you girls, the floral departments in grocery stores can be of the same help, ok for the mature guy; lol, he's there somewhere). But that's just a little secret between you, me, and whoever has run into this before, lol; I know your out there, and said "hey, I got to remember what she/he said!" when this happened to you.

But, how I get over first impressions is - I know that I have, myself, so much more than just a first impression to offer; and that my lasting impression will really "Wow!" the person that I want to impress. And that is what Really Matters, that there is something underneath the surface so that "you don't just stick your toes in the pool, you jump all the way in." But you got to know how to have fun doing it, and be understanding of how other's are going to perceive you. A good first impression - I want to learn something about you. I want to learn something new, that I didn't know before. And, I want to have fun, while doing it; make me laugh a little. That will, I think, leave a lasting impression for a good, first impression.

lovebird01 Good article! First impressions are stressful, since you only have one chance to make a favorable one. Good points here, using conversational skills, and injecting humor. A good move; humor helps break the tension. Flower gifts appeal to almost all women! - More than a year ago
