An average rating is 5/10 (basic math). An 8.5/10 is significantly above average.

9-10 is "goddess" territory.
8-9 is "extremely attractive"
7-8 is "very attractive"
6-7 is "solidly attractive"
5-6 is "decently attractive"
4-5 is "okay"
3-4 is "not especially attractive"
2-3 is "pretty unattractive"
1-2 is "damn ugly"

That seems like a very high score. I'd treat 10 as a theoretical ideal that no one really ever gets. That makes 9 a score that the hottest actresses and models have, so 8.5 is incredibly high.

Bottom line: the guy thinks you're hot and wants you to know it!

It's pure math.. You have from 1 to 10, 10 is hot, 1 is not and 5 is average so I guess since 8.5 is close to 10 your are above average. Congrats, he rated you spot on.
