Hi, can I ask for your help. You see I am Half Asian. since I was small my accent had always been different. as my professors call it, the British Accent. I have no British blood but how come I have this accent, it's just that during our English class, I often attract the attention of others when reciting as I have different accent than the rest. the other guys would usually laugh at me, and when I was a kid I tend to get in trouble with bullies because of this. they say that the way I speak English is very strange and funny. they said that I talk as if I was drunk and my accent is strange, like some kind of pirate or whatever, because of this they would always laugh at me when I was a kid telling me that I watch too much pirate shows, I don't even know any pirate shows! though sponge bob does have a pirate in the beginning but I am sure mine is not like that, I don't speak like that I don't add 'yaarr' to my sentences. can you tell me how to change it? even though I took some voice lesson I cannot help but still have the same accent, the teachers and instructors told me that it is my natural and I will not be able to change it. but still I was hoping that I can still change it, please some advice. thank you.

Don't try to change it, keep it as is. You are who you are and if people don't like you because of your accent they're being silly.

if you ever see those kids again tell, them "IDDQD" they'll know what it means. . .

Also you could record and post your voice if you want (it would be helpful) . . . or listen to mine

theyre the ones who are going to sound silly to westerners when they visit and speak English not you so carry on speaking English in the correct accent and ignore them. pirates sound completely different to English accents so your instructors are talking a load of rubbish!

hmmm, it's more like Scottish accent that's what my mom use to tell me, and she told me that it fits me and should just ignore those who says otherwise. anyway thank you for that.

Your right, I grew up with this accent and even when I was in elementary that is how I talk, I don't know why. but it's just stuck with me, my sisters and mother didn't have that accent they just told me that it's natural for me and that it happens with all of us. but it's just that, it's kind of mortifying every time that the others would look at me and ask me if I am a foreign. I am not so different from them, I have the same shade of skin. perfectly tan, though I guess I got that from my mother. it's just that it's uncomfortable to be surrounded by people who was very different from you... kind of alienating... by the way thank you for your opinion

Pirates usually speak with an exaggerrated West Country accent (Jack Sparrow doesn't use this accent) so I don't know what the hell your instructors are talking about - unless you really do swing into the classroom on the light fixture, guzzle some rum and say 'Yo ho ho'?

huh, I don't. I don' swing or dance, I don't even know how to dance. and I don't say Yo ho ho. it's just that my accent is very different. they said it was British accent but still rare for British and I am not a British. I use to speak like this as a kid so maybe it just got stock? they told me it was British/Scottish accent. it's just kind of irritating when every one speaks with the same accent yet you are different.

What frame of reference do these people have for your accent anyway? They probably don't know anything apart from movies - many of which have non-British actors effecting terrible 'British' accents.

Ah, you see we use to have a Scottish science professor during our first year but he had return to his home country has his mother died, the way I talk was very similar to him just that my voice is not as rough as his.

I know what you mean. I feel when I'm doing a presentation no one ever takes me seriously bc they laugh when I say words different. I have a Bahamian accent.
