Consider the eating habits of American culture--small breakfasts, medium lunches, and large dinners. When you eat breakfast, you have been "starving" yourself for probably a good 10 hours without food and yet the meal is small. When you eat a large dinner, you intake a huge amount of food, only to quickly enter the most sedentary state of your whole day (sleep). Flip these meal sizes around, or at least lunch and dinner.
Some other tips:
Conquer psychological eating. If you're bored, figure out something else to do besides food. If you're stressed, don't medicate with sweets.
Cut down (not eliminate) on the amount of starchy carbs you eat (pasta, bread, etc.) and replace those calories with protein and fat. You'll probably eat less calories on your own, as protein/fat take considerably longer to digest and will keep you feeling full longer.
As jarett said, constantly eat small amounts throughout the day. The "small meals" throughout the day might be some string cheese here, some trail mix there, in between bigger sit-down meals. The idea is to not let your hunger get tuned up so high and you overeat at the next meal with a fury.
Fat distribution is hormonally regulated. You don't have that much choice (short of liposuction) in where you want it to come off. As long as you keep losing fat, it'll eventually go. If the "pouch" is a result of fat underneath your ab muscles, low intensity long duration cardio will help and it should go away rather easily. If it's fat between your abs and your skin, diet will work fine.

You have to eat and exercise. When you don't eat, your metabolism goes down. Your body doesn't know when it's going to eat next, so it stores all the food as fat. But when you eat a bunch of small meals, your metabolism goes up, because it's always getting food, so it burns the food instead of storing it as fat. You do want to drink lots of water, that is importat. BUT YOU HAVE TO EXERCISE! If you exercise 4 or 5 times a week for an hour, doing 30 min cardio and 30 min weights or machines, and eat right and drink lots of water, you can lose 1-2 pounds a week. So that means in 2 months, you can lose 8-16 pounds in a very healthy way.
Running is the quickest way to trim belly fat. There is not really a specific workout that spot trains love handles (which totalllllllly sucks). When you lose weight, you don't just lose it in one spot, it comes off equally from different parts of the body. Usually for girls, you lose weight in your face first, then down your body from there (which means it may take a few weeks before you start to see results in your torso region). But be patient and don't try to lose weight too fast. The faster you lose it the faster it piles back on. For healthy, long term weight loss, health experts say not to loose more than 2 lbs a week. You should do at least 40 minutes of cardio, at least 3 or 4 times a week for faster results. Accompany this with crunches, and be sure to stretch out. But remember, the most important thing in losing weight to consider is what you eat. If you eat bad, you won't see results. You don't neccessarily have to eat less, you actually just need to eat more healthful foods. Instead of snacking on greasy chips, choose an apple. Try fruit and yogurt for dessert. Choose whole grain over white bread. If there's a low fat option, take it. And drink a lot a lot a lot of water. You may gain water weight within the first two weeks but it will drop off durastically a week or so later. Good luck! Hope this helped!
I have the smae problem...
like your abs are hard towards
the top but not lower.
Sit ups don't help you or me.
Instead I do many differnt ab workouts at
the gym. I started seeing little improvements:)
I do about 15-20 mintues or cardio, then
switch to abs straight away.
There are huge yoga balls that you sit on, get a smaller
weight ball put on your stomach and start doing crunches.
This helps so you can have the perfect abs!
As for the love handles; put your knees to one side then
crunch straight up. I usually start feelin the burn
really fast!
Hope this helps!

i'm somewhat like that too...make sure you eat regularly, and not too much, but more impotantly, not too little.
exercise, and try to make it as enjoyable as possible. working out alone in the house sucks, but if you had a few friends with you and you tried a summer sports clinic or something, you'd enjoy exercising a lot and you wouldn't even notice how much weight you've lost.
so I think summer clinics will do you a lot of good. if you take martial arts I'm sure you will lose a lot! trust me, I've tried it myself and lost all my baby fat and got toned. ;)Oh gosh, I hate swimsuit season. Yeah, I feel your pain. The best way to loose weight si to watch what you eat and work out. It stays off longer. Also, develop and reasearch neat tricks- like that by drinking cold water, you're burning those pesky calories.
Honestly, depending on your frame, you probably aren't hefty in the least, so don't sweat it. Guys like curves.Get as active as you can. Run, lift weights, whatever you like. I recommend the low carb diet because it does help get extra fat off. It requires that you eat healthy afterward but works quickly. It worked for me and I've kept if off 4 over 2 yrs.
