"No ring, fair game" - agree? disagree?

MEANING, if he hasn't wifed you up then he and you are both fair game to other people?

NOT saying y'all have free roam to cheat / pursue other partners, but saying it's not 100% unacceptable for other people to try and pursue either him or you.

TYPICALLY (obviously there are exceptions) when you're married people lose interest when they peep the ring on your finger. But if you have no ring, does that mean you're fair game?

It's interesting to think about. Because there are obviously people who don't believe in marriage.

Again this isn't putting into question your ability to be faithful, instead more-so asking if you agree that y'all aren't off the market unless married in some way or another.

You're obviously not single, but this saying is basically implying you're not unavailable either.

I don't think it's fair game. If someone feels that way, then maybe they ought to be single.

I get it's frustrating for people who have been in a relationship for a long time, and they want to take the next step (marriage) but their partner isn't ready or hasn't popped the question yet. But I don't think it's right for the partner to basically say they are fair game. At least I think it's disrespectful for someone to say that to their partner. Because what if the partner is very happy with them or doesn't believe in marriage?

Certainly anyone is free to leave any relationship (even a marriage) when it no longer suits them. Marriage should be forever, but sometimes things happen and people change to a point where the two people are better off apart. Sometimes situations degrade and one partner needs to leave for their mental and emotional health or even physical health if the relationship has become toxic.

If someone truly wants marriage and they are unhappy because their partner does not want marriage, then maybe the pair is not meant to be?

If someone thinks being in a relationship but not married is still considered on the market, then why are they in a relationship? To me it just seems silly.

That's insinuating that your whole relationship boils down to a single piece of jewelry. So until he puts a ring on my finger I'll refuse to be unavailable to other people? It's not even a question- nobody is going to propose to someone who won't be exclusive in the first place. That's some skewed logic. I don't know about you but I'd be with my guy because we like and care about each other and enjoy each other's company, not because my goal is to get a ring.

If you are in a relationship I would consider that off the market, after all relationships are a form of commitment as well. It's not like "yeah, we are in a relationship now, let's take new pictures, but I'm going to text this guy I talked to this morning and flirt". If you are in a relationship you shouldn't consider yourself to be fair game as then you need to question whether you should be in the relationship to begin with...

The ring is just symbolic in my opinion. What's important is the dynamics of the relationship you are in. In other words, how deeply are you both commited to each other? If there is interest in other partners, that may suggest a level of commitment that is more on the surface, unless you both have some kind of mutual understanding. . I can see a point where you would require a certain level of commitment in relation to what you want, and if you don't get that, you're out of here or are interested in getting that commitment via another partner. It depends on what you want.

If I'm in a committed relationship with someone I expect them to be committed as well if they can't honor then I'm not interested, I don't need a certificate of marriage to feel like I shouldn't be cheated on.

Until a certain age I see it as testing the waters, fully just experimenting.
Then starts dating, that i see as practice, you practice long term goals together, you practice living together, are still learning what you want yes, but you are also learning which people give respect and how to show respect back, sticking to your partner or showing loyalty is a very important trait that I look for before I get married.
I like to live together as if we are married before we get married, that way we both know what we get ourselves into ahead of time. By the time we get married nothing should change except a very fucking expensive piece of paper for the man.
You don't show me loyalty now, I know you never practiced, so you gonna try and practic after marriage, learning is best done through mistakes. You don't make those mistakes during marriage, you practice before you get there.

I think it's pretty shitty to suggest breaking up a relationship for something far less serious than what they'd be leaving.

So 'why don't you dump your live in partner so we can casually hook up' is kind of crappy.

But if someone has a boyfriend or girlfriend and you'd want to date them you can tell them. You can't go try to sabotage things. But you can upfront tell them.

Arguably I'd take that even to marriage. You don't tell someone married person out of the blue you want to hookup or you're basically part of cheating.

But if you've absolutely fallen in love with some married person and can imagine you might be marriage-serious with them, I don't think it's wrong to tell them and let them turn you down, or not.

I disagree. When you've committed to exclusivity, you should be exclusive. Ring or not. Yes, a ring adds a good deal more formality to it, but if you're in the position that you'd accept a proposition even without a ring, you should probably be questioning your relationship in the first place.

I think if they aren't going to get married, they could still exchange rings as a promise between them to stay together forever. And that would discourage others from hitting on her. Guys hardly ever get approached, so they don't really need a ring.
