Wisdom:

The quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement; the quality of being wise. - A simple Google search

For as long as I can remember, I was led to believe that people senior to me deserved respect.

Just. Like. That.

They didn't have to know me personally to receive it. They just had it dished out to them. An obligation of mine, thanks to my parents.

And with respect came the notion that said elders were a little more wise than the likes of a young'un like me.

I rejected the idea after a little bit of observation. Yep, that's all it takes.

Some people make the same mistakes time after time. They never learn. I'd say that someone who changes their habits in an effort to avoid an eventuality has got a pint of wisdom in them.

There are some folks who have to make the same mistakes over and over again to learn. Some never do. Some figure it out before they even beat down that path. Cheers to the latter.

I suppose 'growing up' is similar in that sense. At what age does one grow up? I'm 19, and since I was a kid I was under the impression that people just magically sorted their sh*t out. I realised not so long after that people don't magically know the answers. With age (and relevant stimuli) comes cynicism, impatience, and well-defined priorities. In other words, no time for sh*t to not go as planned. I know a lot of folks like that. My parents for one, who are roughly forty years my senior.

But they're just one end of the spectrum. There are folks I know that are as childish as a ten year old, and are in their mid-forties. There are folks that are as lost as me, and are almost seventy. Yikes. It brings about that cheery rhyme: "Fake it 'till you make it".

So I suppose it is safe to say that wisdom is the result of accrued knowledge. The kind of knowledge that gets you through life alive and mentally well. Common sense? Yeah, it plays a part I suppose.

Thanks for hearing me out,

- KtW
