Marriage is about responsibility aka commitment to society, self and partner(s), nothing more nothing less.
'Marriages are made in heaven' is a term coined by someone wise enough not to include neither genders nor species cause it's supposed to be that way.
Marriage is a way of human society to ensure responsibility towards each other thus keeping the society productive.
Now this institution of marriage though perceived & imbibed by various religions as a means to procreate, nature never meant it that way else even the feelings of love and affection leave alone between genders but also species wouldn't be possible.
However, the various people, sects, religions etc prohibiting / opposing the complete freedom of same gender marraige leave alone inter species serves a purpose of keeping a check on total anhilation of natural way of human reproduction. Any vehicle that picks up momentum requires to be steered and brakes to ensure it doesn't crash. But if the brakes were to be engaged at every step, the whole purpose is beat. Humans were always meant to evolve by thought, that is the way of nature which probably got tired of the same species evolving and growing extinct after a point of time, thus humans the way we are :)
It's more the insecurity of those trying to implement a ban on same gender etc marriages than the practical reason for why the ideas were instituted.
If you don't like something it's ok, live and let live. No one's coming into your space telling you what to do with your life, likewise why tell someone who to fall in love with or who to commit to?
Earlier it was a war between races and now it's between genders. Hetrosexuality will never be abolished or go extinct if that is the fear. It's a different kind of racism that's all :) though those opposed to it won't term themselves racist.
There is no harm in not liking something but going phobic and slandering, ganging up against as a result of that dislike isn't the most civil way of life.
Chances are good that those who are against same gender marriage don't believe in gender equality either or will probably accept gender equality just as a cover up to align with the modern world (there may be exceptions though).
There will be another era where there won't be homophobia but something else to deal with, just like upon a time there was racism to deal with but in the current era racists are looked down upon and laws against them are stern in all countries :)
End of the day marraige is a commitment to self immaterial of gender or race, to be responsible to each other & society. So long as they are contributing their bit where is the problem?
