#DontJudgeChallenge - my opinion

Ok, so I've just recently encountered this new trend on the internet called "Don't judge a book by it's cover" or "Don't Judge Challenge" and for all those of you who haven't heard of it yet - it's basically teenagers recording short clips of themselves where they've modified their looks to purposefully make themselves appear 'ugly' with painted-on mono brows, pimples and wearing big, nerdy glasses for instance (who even told them that these things are what makes a person ugly??), they then cover the camera with their hand and when they remove the hand they are shown all styled up looking their absolute (and of course all natural, ahem..) 'best'.

Now the goal of this was originally to promote tolerance for people who look different form the norm, hence are perceived less attractive and to ditch the dogmatic beauty ideals - but to be REALLY honest with you and to say it with quite blatant words (excuses for my language) this has really grown into nothing but hypocritical bullshit recently!

Do these kids really think they are helping people that can't help or change the way they look by shaming them and just obviously letting them know how ugly they think they they are?

In my opinion, this challenge is just taking body shaming to a whole new level and all the shallow, superficial teenagers participating in this are quite obviously just doing it to impress their crush and get attention really.

There's no way you can fight bullying with even more bullying.

Seeing nonsense like this sort of makes me wish I could just exit the planet to be honest..

That video was funny. Most of the guys' "after" shot looked like they were trying for their best Justin Bieber impression.

Otherwise this has the opposite intended affect. People with acne and monobrows and stuff like that are just gonna see themselves as the "before" shot, knowing that they can't just put some soap on their face to look like the "after" shot.

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like if this 'challenge' was done the other way around, it would have a bigger impact. Like having dolled-up and gorgeous people remove their make-up and the ideal lighting to show they look pretty average without the artistic touch-up.

I totally agree.
I think if people wanna do this challenge, they should post one before and one after make-up video of themselves since that will be a way better and more accurate representation of their actual self than those 'manipulated' looks - but I guess most of these kids would never even dream about showing themselves in front of a camera without any make-up on

I just watched it and some of the "before" makeup actually looks a little better in a weird way - like rugged lol. The first dude wiped off the "facial hair" and I was like "... oh. you're a kid." and then I felt gross.

I think it's hilarious that the challenge is called "the don't judge challenge" since what they're doing is literally judging people with monobrows, pimples, scars, facial discoloration, unwanted facial hair in general, freckles etc. It literally makes no sense to me? Why are you putting that shit on your face? Why do you act like that's what you look like daily? Why do you act like people need to get rid of all that stuff in order to be considered beautiful? Jesus.
Well, karma. Their faces are all over the internet and I hope that one day they'll realize what superficial, vain pricks they're being. But then it'll be too late. They're already being judged for it, so.

True , true - the initial purpose was to decrease prejudices toward people considered as " less attractive " - but those are mocked by this clip actually and made fun of- it comes off as " I'm lucky, at least I'm "good-looking" " .

What hasn't been mentioned yet anywhere however is :

What about people who are extremely good-looking? - They get the same amount of prejudices. You get judged on a daily basis by anyone. The same sex, will most often just "hate" you - a female relative of mine used to model , till she decided to pursue a different career - and she said it was awfully hard to get to know people outside the modeling industry. Espeically guys. She only had a very few female friends.

I agree, I think many people never take that into account when they look at beautiful people - they just assume that everything is automatically so much easier if you have the looks..

I know, you can still feel miserable about yourself. No, not everything is "good " and just "going well" for you just because you're beautiful. Couples often look alike, or both are in the same league looks-wise, - it will be hard to find a mate therefore. My relative has never been with below-average looking guys for this reason- no mutual attraction. She is the only one in my family I look similar too, except that she has brown hair, people think I'm her younger brother...

Uhm, I was a late bloomer when it comes to puberty, so was she, we both had to grow into our looks. It wasn't always like that. We both used to be ugly ducklings. I'm grateful for what I have, so is she. If it had always been this way, we'd probably be very arrogant - a thing we both hate

Haha I'm actually not sure if "being a late-bloomer" determines whether you're arrogant or not really - I know people who have always been super pretty and are still very kind and people who were late-bloomers but now really think they're the shit and how they're better than everyone else :/ if you're not arrogant that's good tho! :)

My relative, who is 33- but looks no older than 25, says that girls and guys alike, who are discontent with their looks are just jealous and put others down to compensate for their self-perceived unfortunate looks. She also says, that truly good-looking people ( speaking of model looks) never ever talk about this topic even. Interesting.

I absolutely agree that it's usually the rather "unattractive" people that the hate comes from but it's not like actual models don't gossip at all - it's sad to say but they can be pretty damn mean when it's about their competition really

Oh yes, she started at 18, and said, especially the 15 or 16 year old girls there were very mean and childish and would gossip about her- she looked more like 16 at 18 - those girls would badmouth her and spread nasty rumors - they were just green with envy ! She began developing good self-confidence at 19 though. Just like me. We are insanely much alike ! Despite the 14 year age gap.

-because the industry promotes an unrealistically high standard of beauty. Like, you can have the face, but not the height - or vice versa- ; the right foot size - but not the right chest measurements - or vice versa- and so on.

The industries exclusively suggests "ultimate perfection" - and this even gets photoshopped most of the time. + make up. Do you know Sean O' Pry - the guy in Taylor Swift's Blank Space music vid? - This standard - or for females - Giselle Bündchen. And this degree of beauty still gets photoshopped. See.

Truth is - they don't actually care about your foot size which really really sucks when you're at a runway show and you have to fit your feet into a sice 5 when they are actually a size 7 www I think many girls feet kinda died like that lol - and it doesn't matter how "perfect" you are there's always gonna be something wrong about you so you're trying to make up for it in other aspects and for most of them that's losing weight, I think many European agencies are the worst, especially smaller ones since they need to bring out fantastic models in order to compete with the bigger ones

And yes, just today when I was in town, I saw a woman who clearly had everything it takes to be a model, but she obviously had anorexia. I'd seen her about 2 years or so ago the last time, and she is till anorexic. I wonder what's wrong with her :/ :( But I think you and I can infer what it is

If they want to keep doing those challenges, then it would make more sense if they would first show themselves with make-up and then all natural.

Haha hey it's teenagers being self righteous teenagers. It's always been that way. Don't stress yourself too much on it. Hopefully they'll one day mature and realize the actual implications of what they've done.
