Ex reached out to me after his mom died?

We dated about 6 months from 2016-2017. I had him blocked on FB because I felt we didn’t need to communicate. Well I unblocked him and he msged me same day that his mom passed away about 3 weeks ago.

Why would he message me? He’s the one that ghosted me last time. And now he msgs me. He also brought up my favorite amusement park. But I don't know what he wants. I don’t want to be a rebound for his moms passing. I did express my sympathies and told him if he needs anything or to talk to let me know. He’s ignored my message now for 2-3 days. So why is he even messaging me?

He is hurting inside and is looking towards the person that may have been there for him when he didn’t understand or that he didn’t know would come to mind. Just tell him you are ok to listen to how he feels but that’s it unless his still have feelings.
