How long does it take for you to get over an ex usually?

I always see questions on here that will start like “my ex and I broke up a year ago”…let me stop you right there. Why are you still asking questions about an ex that you haven’t been with in a year lol. Does it really take some of you THAT long to move on?
I would only understand if you’ve been together a very long time but half of the time they’re like “we were together for 6 months” huh?

Aside from this one girl in like preschool which obviously doesn’t count. I had one girlfriend, this happened to be in fourth and fifth grade, and while it may not seem real, it sure felt like it, especially at the end. Fifth grade was also middle school which also helps it count.

The end was back in early 2014, the worst period of my whole life. Even at the age of 10, we were both really depressed and leaned on each other for support. But she was controlling, and would get very upset if I didn’t text her back right away, and she wanted me all to herself. On March 5, 2014 we broke up over the stupidest thing. She did it in front of my whole class and was very rude to me for like a month. Like she called me an asshole to my sister when we had her over a month later. I don't know but we were very young and very dumb so obviously I don’t care.

2014 was an awful shitstain of a year and the breakup was one of the integral parts of it, but not the main reason. I was more depressed for other reasons like hating school, it’s just that losing her made school so much harder to go through. 2015 however, was a different story. 2015 was amazing, so I was definitely over it by late fall 2014 because that’s when things got much better.

Considering just how poorly internally I have reacted to rejection, even the easiest letdowns, nowadays (when it’s not on Tinder or Bumble because those are a joke) I don’t really know if I should get back into the game right now. Maybe next year.

But there’s this guy that was never technically my boyfriend, we just hung out heaps getting to know each other as if we would date.

No one has ever been like him. No one has ever been so good to me and made me feel the way he did. It’s been two years (my age is wrong on here) and I still miss him. He’ll always have a part of my heart.

It took me about 8 months to feel like myself after the breakup of my 6yr long relationship. I'm 2 mths out from the break up of my ex-fiancé and we were together for nearly 3 years.

I feel... Better. But far from all better. It'll probably take me again close to a year to get all the way back.

I’m still moved by conversations or interactions that I’ve had with someone that I met briefly in a random place in the world— commonalities or experiences that have united us in some way that might have never existed except for that one moment when the universe put us in the same place. So there’s that.
You think of time as the factor that connects one person to another. It’s deeper than that. I’ve known a few people my whole life that could dwindle into the world and I’d never see them again and I wouldn’t bat an eye.


So that being said, it takes varies on the time that it takes me to get over the loss of someone from my life— regardless if the loss is seemingly positive or negative.

It's about the connection you had and how it impacted you. Regardless of the length. Reason being that our hearts desire a connection with someone who will love us, be kind to us, and someone we can really relate to. So when it's over, it's usually not easy to forget.

It took me a good while to get over my last ex, even needing to speak to a relationship counselor once, that's how much it affected me. But the ex before her, took me about 2 months and I was fine.

Some people have dated a person for 2 or 3 years and could move on in a few months. Others have dated someone for like 3 or 4 months but still can't forget the person. It comes down to the connection you had or even how things ended.

I would say the hardest part was the first week, after that I was perfectly fine. Thoughts of him still pop up in my head everyday. Sometimes it’s fond memories from our relationship and other times it’s of how he hurt me. We weren’t compatible in the end so it wouldn’t have ever worked out in the long run for either of us.


I blocked his numbers and erased all messages, pictures, and playlists with him in it so that I could move on and I have no intention of going back to him. So I consider myself over him for the most part.

Varied by the ex. I've heard numbers like the length of the relationship, but I don't believe it. One girl I was with 2 years and it was 3ish-4 years before I was really over her fully.

Girl before her it was a year together but I was good in 6 to 8 months.

Girl before her relationship was only 6 months but we were a thing before we were together that probably leveled out to a year. I wasn't really over her fully for a year and a half, maybe 2 years.

For me I know it mostly comes down to experiencing and fully processing the emotions, getting back to living your life as soon as possible and after morning getting back out there quickly.

Like just getting back out there isn't a good move. Because you'll be dealing with a lot of shit and be wreaking havoc on yourself and others all because you haven't dealt with your baggage from your ex.

it has always been mutual and we've talked it through in advance so we always had a period of "reconciliation" and to defuse sort of speak, so... by the time we actually are officially no longer a couple, we are already moving on, and we were absolutely convinced that it would be for the best of us

so, in a way... there was nothing to get over in the first place, I just focus on being alright on myself and with myself

Both of my relationships lasted a year. My first ex it took me literally YEARS to get over her. Truth be told I probably was not really over her even into my second relationship.

My second one took me about 4 months to be comfortable dating again but probably a full year to quit feeling hurt by her cheating on me.

I am the type of guy who starts being very devoted as soon as I know I love a woman, which usually takes me about 5-6 months to get that comfortable. My devotion and loyalty run deep and I make ALL major life decisions at a slow-controlled pace.

The very reason I've only had 2 serious relationships and have been single for 7 years at age 29 is because I am aware of how my loyalty can be used against me and I am very picky with who I date because I cannot simply get over someone I've invested in emotionally. This is with me still being a virgin as well.

I was raised by a single mom & she taught me to give all of myself & I hadn't figured everything out yet, took me years to get over the first one, I invested far too much of myself. Thankfully I also had my Grandfather & Uncles in my life (my uncle Russell in particular, he was a lady's man until his late 60's).

I was able to figure out later to establish boundaries of what I'll tolerate, what I won't tolerate. VERY important; = establish relationship dynamics. Be willing to walk away if your well stated boundaries are continually crossed. This makes walking away from an ex very easy. Yes, it's easy for me to withdraw if she doesn't respect my boundaries.

Depends on the ex, how long we dated, who broke up with who and how it was done. Most important there needs to be closure. Some people don’t “believe” in closure but that’s a very cruel and selfish assumption.

I got over my last ex pretty quickly because I gave her full closure. It was torture (had to deal with 2 hours of her going ballistic and screaming) but I left knowing I did the right thing.

My ex before her completely ghosted me after 9 months of dating with no warning after a minor argument. That took me around 6 months. I wasn’t completely surprised given her youth and immaturity. It was a big age gap relationship. It still hurt though. Hurt a lot.

But my third ex before that one was the worse one by far. It’s a long story but she blindsided me by how she broke up (treated me like I was less than human). I later found out years later she cheated on me right before it happened. I still think about that one more often than I like to admit.

For me once I fully accept that they no longer want me and there is no future together, all I love I once had for them is lost forever, even the "friendly" level of respect and love.

It may take people a year or longer due to the impact an ex had on them or they're both inherently toxic depending on what they do during the grieving process.
