Why does man break up with girlfriend (for her benefit more than his) & says he’s going to ensure contact isn’t lost as he doesn’t want to lose her?

This was said firmly like it was genuinely meant. He said he’s going through some stuff at the moment and doesn’t want to put that on her as she’s getting in deeper than he currently can. (He’s still healing from last hurts). Does the contact thing he wants to come back and give it a go when he’s fixed, even though he wouldn’t want to stop her moving forward, or something else?
