They're trying to gauge your sexual market value. If you've moved on, them they have to feel inferior, but if if your not, then they can relax. I'm not sure why just breaking up with them can't be enough to wipe them in shape, but that's evolution for you
Only reason I can think of is they want to have a fail safe. In case the next relationship fails, they want to know if they can go back to the "old stand by."
