Why do exes check up on you after a breakup?

Me and my ex have been broken up for about 4 months. He texted me yesterday just to "check up on me".
I don't trust his motives. Was he possibly trying to play mind games with me and get me to believe that he misses me or something?
I replied coldly but i want to gi back and ask him why he's checking up on me.
We had been in a sort of situationship situation for almost 2 years and broke up because i was sick of his games. I do really miss him amd since he texted me i haven't been able to get him off my mind.
What should i do
I believe he knows I'm the type of person to go crazy over deciphering the meaning of a single text but I'm not sure...

He just wants to make sure that you're going to be there for him with open hands when he pops up out of nowhere. Tell him you're seeing someone else and wait for his comedy response.
