Why would my ex take my great qualities for granted and not act like a team mate/helpmate/life partner?

It's more about starting to take the other for granted and not valuing, not being grateful which is why even if it's your great quality it's only gonna go unnoticed.
Also, did you value his qualities? It can't be that he was good for nothing. What I mean is the feelings should be mutual and not unilateral. Then only a relationship prospers.

Yes I did. I would have been with him and even married him had he not broken things off with me. My parents just chalked it up to him being a dumb, arrogant asshole all those months ago.
