No. He just needed to change the direction of his life after the breakup altered his life, things needed to change, so how about he tried something new? Cigarettes sound fine, he reinvented himself, maybe he didn't smoke because you hated it, now he could do it if he wanted to, and he have now a girl that it isn't bothered by it, she may smoke with him.
they were never given coping skills growing up. growing up, they were taught not to cry or show emotions. so, in turn, they have no idea how to deal, so they had to turn to something.
Only happens as a representation of how the relationship was for them. Seems that for him the relationship was quite stressful and he wasn't happy with it. Cigarettes for stress/alcohol for sorrow.
There's this sort of meme online that guys get addicited to the gym after a breakup. I'm no scientist but i guess that you look for another source of dopamine after a breakup. While some look for pleasure in drugs, others engage in hobbies like working out or drawing. These hobbies can also become quite addicitive, but in a good way i guess. Hitting the gym and being on track with your diet feels good tho and can help you get over bad experiences in general.
Immature, inexperienced, younger and weaker men turn to addictions. More mature, experienced, and stronger men turn to exercise, learning, and productive activities instead.
First off a person does not grab a cigarette out of the blue because of a breakup. Oh my girlfriend left me let me go buy a pack of cigarettes…. Alcohol maybe but not cigarettes…. He had to have smoked before or was hiding them from you….
I dont think its just men, but mainly because these addictions, usually drugs offer a temporary relief. And it might been seen as a good way to escape.

It is a male weakness that some have. It seems to be hard-wired into them.
Because i had no one else.
Was drunk for 2 months everyday and only stoppes because i ran out of money
Most men are weak. Can't handle not being with that girl anymore. They also have a much harder time moving on than women do.
It's not addiction they turn to its poison. They miss the poison of the women they just lost.
I think it is a matter of taking the loss very hard and the addiction is to help numb the pain, causing any more problems.
I am so glad I wasn't 21 when I experienced the worst heartbreak I have ever had. I would have definitely become an alcoholic.
i didn't i doubt any guy does, we move on easier less "healing waiting" just go to next girlfriend.
Of course, if one gets down and think they aren't meeting anyone new anyway thoughts go to why not? What does it really matter? Etc etc.
My opinion is that smoking will hurt you and damaged your body and no one would want to be around you if you are smoking
He is heart broken and can't deal with living without you. So he and others turn to substance abuse to cope.
Can I teach you Turkish? Can we talk together?

To trying to forget her and the pain of the break-up
Maybe he was heartbroken and that was his way of coping
