I think her point is what comes to your mind has been fed by propaganda and wrong.
To day that a Confederate flag has nothing to do with racism... The ego behind that statement... Could you say that to black people who grew up in Alabama in the 40's?
Could say the same about any flag including the American flag in the 40's when racism was an issue all over the world. The point is that flag wasn't made to represent racism. It was made as a battle flag.

You can't cherry pick what parts of history and culture you want to ascribe to cultural symbols and then enforce that on others. You can't completely divorce the fact that some cultural symbols have a lot of different and ambiguous meanings because of the sheer scope of something like a whole country and its flag. For some people those symbols hold a lot of negative meaning, and you can't make someone wrong for justly and somewhat accurately remembering something actually connected to a cultural symbol like that. I understand that things change with history and sometimes groups take advantage of symbols too. Like in the last few years, a bunch of racist alt-right radicals started using the Confederate flag for their purposes. Perhaps you disagree with them tarnishing the image of that flag because to you it means something different, but tough titties I guess.

I cannot rightly say I do not know the history of the British flag as well and I will not go flying or defacing any flag without knowing it's history or what it represents. To my knowledge though the British flag is not a symbol of white supremacists and lack of education. But like I said I don't know so I can't give a yes or no to that.
