I gave a woman my number and she texted me. Can I go straight to suggesting a date?

Built a little rapport before giving my number. Exchanged names and some small talk. I gave her my number and she texted a few hours later saying it was nice to meet.

I'm thinking I respond with the same, a subtle compliment (is it weird to say tell a stranger you like her style?), and then basically suggest a casual date seeing when/if she's available.

I prefer not to get into an extended conversation via text or phone. I figure my approach puts the ball in her court while making my interest clear.

If you want to compliment her, don't compliment her "style". That's too vague and could mean a lot of things. Her "warm smile" or something specific about her (non appearance is best) that interests you would be better.

I think asking her on a date is perfectly normal (maybe less common nowadays). You have a perfectly good reason and an honest one. I think you'll win if you tell her what you said here which is that you, "don't like extended conversations via text or phone," so can I take you to _________ (coffee, lunch, dinner)?
