Why do women give so many mixed signals?

Long story short dated this girl a couple months then she decided she just wanted to be freinds due to circumstances that might happen if it ended on a bad note. We see eachother weekly due to outside commitments. She just started seeing someone else but made the comment to me "if he wanted to he would " Am I missing something? She decided to end things / did she expect me to chase and beg her not to?
