I think it's better to ask your partner. However be stern about them being honest, and don't get upset about the answer.

If they say you've gained weight, appreciate the honesty and hit the gym, heck make it a date thing 😁

If it's something related to him being stressed, seriously we guys get distracted by stress, do something nice to get his mind off it. You'd be amazed how much we appreciate something as small as a good meal after work along with a warm smile.

Beyond this, perhaps ask him if he wants to try something new.
