A letter that came three months later. What you would do?

I meet this guy last August. We had an amazing date but he lives overseas, and he was the one asking me to keep in touch. Next, we keep talking for two weeks and he started to be distant so I decided to let him go. A week later he reappeared and asks me if he can send me an email to explain some ideas about our interaction. I agreed... well that was at the beginning of September, I receive the email yesterday, almost three months apart.

His letter explains to me he had never stopped thinking about me and explains to me how each month happened something that he wanted to share with me: from social events to the hospitalization of one of his closest family members. He mention twice how ashamed he feel to write down those feelings knowing how much time apart his letter came and how complicated our interaction might be due to distance.

It was nice to know about him (I was not expecting the letter at all), but I have some hard feelings about his way to disappear and take so much time to send the famous letter. I will definitely answer and ask for clarity and boundaries considerations, but I will also like to know someone else's opinion on this.
