My boyfriend risks his career to become a rapper and I am scared for my reputation. Is it selfish to break up over this?

I study very hard to one day work for the government, the United Nations or even as a diplomat and my boyfriend knows this. He thinks I just do not belive in him and that I won't have to work at all when he becomes rich.

I think you should not be concerned about your reputation. Him being a successful, or not-so-successful rapper isn't going to stop you from getting the career you envision. If you love this guy, it is indeed shallow to break up with him because you're worried about your reputation.

But if you find it embarrassing that your boyfriend wants to be a rapper... and see an incongruency between the future you envision for yourself, and the future he envisions for the two of you... then maybe you're not with the right guy. Leaving 'reputation' out of it entirely. Perhaps you just want different things. The fact that you're worried about your 'reputation' seems to suggest you fully understand how people see this, and you see it the same way. I think it's a fundamental 'compatibility issue'. You shouldn't be embarrassed to bring your boyfriend/husband to your work Christmas party. It sounds like future-you would be.

Rappers are dime a dozen losers!! How many times can you make the same recording over and over again and not get bored with it?

For every successful singer or rapper there are hundreds to thousands that fail. I know. My uncle is a music producer who has worked with bands for about 30-40 years.

If you watch shows like American Idol or X Factor you will see how few of the contestants make it & sometimes those shows will reveal the audition reels... with HUNDREDS of people trying to make it onto the show.

Reputation has nothing to do with it.

Do you want to carry on with a guy who is willing to risk an actual career for a dream? If he had a career & trying to make it as a side hobby - there are plenty of career people who goof around in bands, etc. - that's different.
