I had an open relationship twice and both times went great. I know that it can go terrible. I think my mentality towards it is most of the reason why it went well.
The thing with both of these woman was that we loved eachother and wanted to date seriously but we were also in our early 20's and extremely adventurous and we were both total nymphomaniacs.
It didn't bother me when she met someone going out with friends and did something as a one night stand because at the end of the day, she came home to sleep in my bed. She paid her half of the rent, she texted me all day, one of them to the point it was a little much at times.
It didn't bother her when I had sex with people who I ran into because at the end of the day, I went home and we had a good time together and knew that we could rely on eachother for anything. Didn't stop us from being best friends.
It was a lot of fun, we had some pretty wild times because of it. I think it also made us more likely to talk about things that were bothering us or generally be more open and direct with eachother.
The amount of trust you have to put in someone for an open relationship is immense but if you find a good person to do it with who you respect eachother, it's a great time.

Then I consider getting into a relationship with someone sex is one of the last things I'm thinking about. I'm thinking about how I want a family and between the two of us to have careers that allow us to be financially stable and still raise the kids.
For that I need to know this person doesn't lie to me and is honest with me and ultimately would never betray my trust in them that our well being as a unit is a top priority.
Personally, if they see it the same way as I do, I really don't care if while we're in our 20's and some freak chance comes across one of us takes it.

Open relationships are oxymoronic and a contradiction vs say "casual-dating".
The former implies that there are rules and expectations to maintain the existence of a relationship. But they do not limit themselves to just one person. That's like calling it an "open-chain gang" it doesn't work.

I think open relationships can work if both parties are on the same page and communicate openly and honestly with each other. For me personally, if I'm not that serious about someone, I'm totally cool with them seeing other people. But if I'm truly invested in a relationship and have strong feelings for the person, I don't think I could handle them being with other people. I think jealousy is a natural feeling in any relationship, and I'm not gonna lie, I do feel it when I think about my partner being with someone else. But, I also understand that everyone has different needs and desires, and if being in an open relationship makes the other person happy, I'm willing to compromise and work through those feelings of jealousy.
However, I do have a major issue with cheating. If you're gonna cheat, just be honest about it and talk to me about it. Don't try to hide it and sneak around behind my back. If you're gonna be with other people, I want to know about it and be able to make a decision about whether or not I'm okay with it. And if I'm gonna be seeing other people, I'll be honest about it too. Honesty is key in any relationship, and I think it's even more important in open relationships.
If someone wants an open relationship, they don't want to be committed to one person. I suppose this is fine, but the problem with adding new people to your relationship, is you don't know who you might be more attracted to, or who might be attracted to you.
Seems the simplest idea is to date several people and not say you're with any particular person. Everyone knows everyone else is dating everyone else and that's that.
It also seems the cheapest sort of cheat. You're hedging your bets. If you don't find someone else that day, week or month to go out with instead of your main squeeze, you always have someone at home waiting for you. What?

Open relationships can be wonderful if everyone is on the same page, communicates well, and practices safe sex. But it's a lot of emotional labor, and takes a lot of maturity to work well. Don't let anyone convince you polyamorous relationships can't be really successful, wonderful, loving experiences. Polyamory is a valid choice, as is monogamy; certain people prefer one or the other, and that's okay.
Two people coming together to be monogamous is a lot more respectful. They agree to not have the reasons for jealousy, other man's babies, random STD's, and so much more other bullshit.
