Just look around. Many hot girls for whom good looking guys would kill are hanging out with guys that just can't hold a candle to the sun. What is wrong with these beauties? No wonder most good looking guys these days end up being single.
I'm very surprised that this is asked by a female, but not surprised you're asking anonymously, as this seems quite shallow! Women do not have one type they are all attracted to. One woman may like blue eyes, one other may like brown eyes. One woman might like dark skin, one might like light skin. If you happen to see a man that is not your preference, why do you assume your taste should be hers too?
I have personally dated overweight men, as well as some others that may have appeared unattractive to other women, but the point is *I* found attraction in them for how they looked that I found pleasing. I can also quickly answer the gold-digger assumption: no. These men had no more or less money than most guys.
If you think many "good looking men" are single, losing out to men that you happen to find unattractive, then you're not realizing what they might be lacking that women can sniff out.
Lastly, don't assume that some couples haven't been together for a long time and have had looks change over that time. Weight can be gained and lost. Jobs come and go. You don't know their story, and thank goodness that we all have our own preferences.

It can be a lot of things... some just do it for attention ( to always feel hotter than their partner ), some do it as the safe option and the guy more likely to not be so high maintenance , some girls actually don't realize how attractive they are they're shocked when they receive compliments and they don't think they can get or keep a good looking guy , and just like how good looking guys are with average / unattractive women.. they meet their standards big time in other areas so it's a win..
Some women appreciate it a lot if a guy shows long-term commitment. For that they will go easy on other criteria such as looks. Long-term relationships also carry a risk, of course: Maybe the guy turned fat and bald only over time while they were already together.
In addition, some women are actually gold-diggers.

Let's start with women thinking 80% of men are "unattractive", which is statistically impossible. And let's also acknowledge that most women are themselves as at least an "8", also impossible. The result is women are demonstrably delusional about physical appearance.

They can pull, you cannot. Those men may look "average" to you, but they fill a need for them. Or it may be it's their brother/dad/uncle and you're just assuming, as you're cold, single and bitter.

Well one reason is these girls are smarter than most and realize that guys suck (usually younger) and men are wonderful.(usually older)

Women are usually more emotional and less logical than men, so it has to do with that too.
It's very easy those type of guys or even women tend to be more grateful towards what they have and generally don't stray and yes a lot of the time the girl is after the money.
