In my experience there are not many people no matter the gender that don't like being complimented. I will compliment someone if I think they deserve one. I don't do it to random people I don't know but if it is a friend or partner I will. As for sending texts why not? As long as you are blowing up their messages constantly then there is no reason you can't say good morning or goodnight. Even a simple how was your day isn't bad. I think most guys won't mind it. I have noticed lots of guys don't text a lot though.
