What do you think is a good amount of time to date before getting engaged? (and explain why)?

I’m asking in the more general sense since every relationship is different.

1 year or less

1-2 years

2-3 years

3-4 years

4-5 years

6-7 years

7+ years

I believe that less than a year is too fast because you haven’t even had a single anniversary yet and more importantly, during the first 3-4 months are so of dating, you may be high on love and you could be seeing everything with rose-colored glasses.


People fall in love and fall out of love within a year all the time, because when they ‘fall in love’ it’s not real love yet.


Real love is strong, not fickle, and it endures through hardships and challenges. Real love is willing to go the extra mile, even if it hurts, even when it’s hard.


It’s very difficult to build that level of depth in less than a year, and your relationship isn’t going to go through many ups and downs and testing times.


If you marry too quickly, you won’t know if your relationship can handle storms when those storms eventually come—and they will come, as with any relationship, given enough time. Challenges will arise sooner or later—it’s inevitable.


So at LEAST one year is what I’d say. Probably closer to 2-3 years is the sweet spot.


In 2-3 years, you’ll have enough time to build a close bond. And, enough seasons will have passed to experience challenges and ups and downs. At or near 2 years, you should already be very sure about whether or not you want to get married.


If you’re waiting 3 years or longer, why are you taking this long to be sure about marrying? Do you not know if they’re the one you want to spend the rest of your life with? You should have an answer by now.


The only reason to not have figured it out by 3+ years would be if it’s purely logistical (e. g. saving up money for a wedding).

If you really love each other there should not be any rush. Beware the woman who rushes things as she is likely more into a wedding then a marriage.

My wife and i were together 2 years before we got married. We were engaged 6 months before we got married. Seamed like the correct time to me.
