Unless your family has money, no one who’s in college has money. There’s a broke college student stereotype for a reason. Expecting a college student to have a nice car is like expecting a cat to bark. It could happen, but it’s not likely. Besides, anyone who judges you just for being in a car that isn’t a nice car isn’t worth your time because they’ve clearly got nothing much going on for them if they’re worrying about what kind of car you’re in. If you’re embarrassed to be seen in it, pay to have the windows tinted or don’t ride with him. Don’t dump a good guy for such a materialistic reason.

If it is junky, you can clean it for him (or try to get him to clean it for you).

My own standard in college was that for me to get in a car, there couldn't be a bunch of fast food bags and stuff in it, it should be reasonably neat and clean but I didn't care about the brand or whatever, in fact I would find it strange for someone in college to have too expensive a car, it would make me question his priorities.
