Perhaps because you never met the guy before and haven't established enough trust to get that personal that quick? I think that's a normal response, and he probably was nervous and struggling to think of things to ask you. If you liked his company, see what things are like on the second date perhaps?

If it was your first date, it's natural being anxious and nervous. It's rare a girl gets really outgoing right from the first day.
So that's pretty normal. Yeah it's something fishy if on subsequent meetings you feel the same way around him.
