What's a polite way to explain to a date you left because he or she was running to late?

If I were you, I'd probably send a text something like:

"Hey, I ended up having to head out since I was waiting for over 30 minutes and you didn't let me know you were running late. No worries though, maybe we can try again another time if you're up for it."

That keeps it polite and gives them a chance to reschedule if they want, but also makes it clear that their lack of communication wasn't cool. You don't owe them an explanation beyond that.

The key is to stay calm and avoid sounding too frustrated or accusatory. Just let them know you had to leave, but leave the door open in case they want to try again when they can actually make it on time. Hopefully they'll learn from this experience and communicate better next time.

1/2 hour seems not long to wait. Anything could have happened. Maybe traffic or getting lost. I guess that date didn't mean that much to you. Had you talked much beforehand? If not, then I might see your view as you could have been stood up for her going out on a date with another.
