Historically, why is the stigma of still living at home, with your folks, or never having lived on your own before, worse in men than in women?

Historically, its an obvious fact that men get judged or frowned upon, criticized, bashed, far more than women do if they still live at home, with their folks, or have never lived on their own before.

Also, its more common for women to see that as a red flag in men when it comes to dating, than the reverse, the other way around. Most men, or just far more men, could care less if a woman is in that situation, not so much the reverse though.

Why do you think it has always been that way?

I think it’s a case by case basis. There are men who have well established jobs that struggle with dating as where there are men living at home feeding off a woman that is trying to help him. It comes down to individual situations if someone’s working but still at home trying to move out that’s one thing.

If someone’s in collage or university that’s one thing. But if someone chooses to have no ambition and doesn’t want to work most people don’t want to be used neither do most men. Even if someone’s wanting to be a stay at home mom or dad… If they are lazy on top of saying home what do you get out of that?

It can be a red or yellow flag for either sex. It just depends but I’ll say that quality of attention isn’t always quantity. Some people get lots of attention but by the wrong people especially people doing well in life. Not everyone’s so honest about their true intentions. I would rather be rejected then led on and used.

Historically, boys were supposed to go out, learn a trade, and start earning a living so that they could provide for a wife and family. Women couldn't earn a living.

Good girls stayed at home, learned to keep house, cook and sew. Living with her parents also assured that she remained chaste. And when a man of means asked her father for her hand in marriage, she would become a wife and mother.

That doesn't make sense anymore, now that women can go to college and get jobs. They can have boyfriends without parental supervision.

Shows the man is capable and show the woman is chaste. In the old days a woman who had lived on her own was seen as impure, because living in her own gives her the opportunity to take many lovers

Nature. Men were designed by nature and millions of years of evolution to be leaders of household formation and take the initiative in providing a home for their own new family. They are the ones who ventured out of their parents' cave and found the caves for their woman and children to live by hook or by crook even if they had to steal someone else's cave by force. That was their natural job, not the woman's job.

Women see men who cannot fulfill that natural role as undesirable, not able to fulfill their masculine role.

I feel like the stigma is just disappearing recently. It's really tough out there. My parents bought a small flat for my fiance and I to live in (we paid them rent) so we could save money for a house. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have that privilege but it is also absolutely a privilege these days to be able to stay at your parents house

It's not.

Historically the woman would be welcomed into the man's home, which was also his father's home, and grandfather's home, and so on, and in most cases this happened while his parents and grandparents were still living there, along with any siblings.

Why it's the case is because women seeking men judge them on their competence and potential as future providers. That it's a false call is clear because there's no evidence to actually use to make a judgement.

In this day though the cost of living independently is phenomenal and off putting for most to even try. Wages have stagnated for the past 3 generations and we're all working just to stay still.

Pretty sure it’s due to the fact that until the 70s women couldn’t even buy a house and to this day single women are the smallest demographic of home owners


So culturally it’s not expected for a woman to move out on her own

That is totally incorrect: there are FAR more single women who own houses as compared to single men:

2.64 million MORE women than men. The trend for home ownership by women is outpacing men by a 2 to 1 margin. This is one of many reasons why men live with their parents more than women do.

Because despite all the hot air from women about "gender equality" and ridding the world of traditional gender roles, women (and society) still have different expectations of men than they do of women. Men are valued for their ability to provide far more than women are. Unlike women, men have only one path to success and to be viewed as a successful man, and that is by having a successful, well-paying career.

If I had to guess it's because historically men are seen and viewed or have been expected to be the breadwinner and Main Financial provider
