Sure. No prob.
I'm a rocker. I was a lead guitarist and vocalist in garage bands from age 16 through my 20s. I was particularly into hard rock like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc.
My wife was a disco chick and liked going out dancing at clubs when she was young.
I was horrified when Saturday Night Fever came out. I couldn't imagine anything more repulsive than John Travolta's character in that film and I hated the song Stayin' Alive.
Given our differences, after our first date, my (future) wife called me, said some friends had offered her two tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers open for the Rolling Stones, and wondered if I was interested. She knew I was a rocker and thought I would like that music even though she didn't know anything about it.
Of course I was interested.
It wasn't her kind of music at all, but we had a great time at the concert.
Since we've been married, I have introduced her to some of my favorite music. And, to my surprise, I have come to appreciate a lot of the disco stuff she used to like.
We also have a lot of music in common, mostly pop songs from the 60s and 70s..
There are some songs that we get a kick out of and sing together on occasion. A couple are:
I've Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher
I Think We're Alone Now - Tommy james and the Shondells
Sheila by Tommy Roe
Those songs just crack us up and are fun to sing.
We had some friends who used to hold 4 or 5 karaoke parties at their house every year from about 2005 to 2020. Since I'm a vocalist, I sang lots of different things and even discovered that I was good at old stuff that I would never have dreamed of singing - Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Elvis, Johnny Rivers, Roger Miller, ...
And my wife and I would sing duets to songs like Ferry Cross the Mersey by Gerry and the Pacemakers, Daydream Believer by Davy Jones of the Monkeys, and other things.
I started another band and played from about 2005 to 2020 when covid mandates shut everything down. My wife love listening to me practice and to our band play.
In the end, our musical differences didn't cause any conflict. Our musical appreciation actually expanded. She likes some of my music now and I like a lot of the stuff that she appreciates. And, as I said, we get a kick out of old stuff that we both liked when we were young.
I will say that I am familiar with lots more music than her because I was surrounded by music most of my life. I had a stack of 45 rpm records from the 50s and early 60s that an uncle gave at a kid. I watched Laurence Welk and variety shows with guest musicians at my grandparent's house. My grandfather had a large record collection and introduced me to lots of stuff. I listened to the transistor radio a lot. And my friends in high school had eclectic tastes. All that contributed to my musical knowledge and appreciation.
I've introduced my wife to a lot. Some of it she likes and some of it not so much. She's not really into electric guitar leads. To her ear, they just sound like noise. LOL
Yes I agree same taste in music is and added plus . Therecare some people who only like what they like pr people like me who likes music and welcomes all types
As far as what music we like or don't like, this is a minor thing to me.
However I would have trouble being with anybody who thinks music is SO IMPORTANT and I have to sit down and LISTEN and PAY ATTENTION to the music they like all the time, or if I like popular music I just haven’t been exposed to the good music that they know about and if I listen to their music it will change my life and that kind of thing. I hate that and I couldn’t date anybody who bugged me about that sort of thing v often.
It is essential for me because I listen to music every day, sometimes all day long, so if you don't like my taste in music, we will never work.
Same here. I listen to it while I'm at work and when I get home. I'm not musically inclined like you but I enjoy listening to music all day long. So it definitely wouldn't work for me either if we didn't have similar taste in music.

hahha, I think you can make it work with different musical tastes. I've always been a big music person. I've never dated someone who shared my musical tastes. My girlfriends generally didn't feel as strongly about music as I did. Music issues were not a problem.
This made me laugh.
Oh lol I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing lol but I'm a big music person too.
I guess I don't really know since none of my girlfriends shared my love of music. The good part is that you get to intoduce them to good music. But you don't get to talk about music on anything but a superficial level. I'd rather have someone who didn't care about music, rather than someone who loves music too... but they love terrible music. That would be the worst. You'd have to compromise and being forced to listen to jazz or something half the time. That might be a relationship problem. I don't know. Thankfully.
I have pretty extensive musical tastes. Everything from ultra-violent hip-hop, to Bob Dylan, to Nirvana and Metallica. The only music I really dislike is electronica dance crap and jazz (blues I feel totally differently. I'm a big Muddy Waters fan).
Do you play any instruments? I used to when I was a kid (violin, trombone, guitar). I bought an accordion a year or so ago. Still haven't gotten very far with it. I'm just messing around with it every once in a while.
I attempted to learn the piano but I was only ever able to play silent night which is pretty easy to learn lol
haha, yes it is! I can even play that one on the accordion. That's cool. I don't actually still play any of the instruments I used to know. So... we end up the same. Playing silent night. (I just do it with an um-pa-pa... you know... because its an accordion)
Lol yeah.
You should try When the Saints Go Marching In. Equally easy, but more fun.
It’s better to be with someone that has a lot of similar interests as you do , just so you have more things to share together. A relationship can still work if you don’t have similar music taste , but it’s better to be with someone with similar music taste so you both can enjoy music and concerts together
yes, it can work...
I think it would ideal perhaps, or better... if both partners had the same or similar taste in music... but I know from experience that it can work just as fine, when there's different likes in music as long as nobody gets snobby about it... lmao
what I find very difficult to imagine is for me to be with someone who doesn't like music at all...
Oh I couldn't do it lol I have to have someone into music too
as long as I don't have to listen to Nickelback... I am good, lmao
Excuse you... there is absolutely nothing wrong with Nickelback lol
excuse me will I jump off the window... lmao
Lmfao dramatic much. They are not that bad.
Whatevs lol I love my Nickelback 😁
lmfao... do you really really REALLY like them? lmao
that's okay... actually, one of my exes also thought they were okay, a couple of their songs anyway
and, I am sure that some of the things I do like myself... might not just be the taste of most people out there, lmao
Lol I'm just messing with you. I like a couple of their songs but I'm no die-hard fan.
I knew nobody would like Nickelback that much... lmao
(I don't really hate it either, lol... it's just funny to me to go about it)
Lmao I mean they really only had a few good songs that I can recall. Nothing to write home about that's for sure. But that is indeed funny
Yeah, it can still work. But obviously it’s better if you like most of the same stuff.
My lady and I share a love of 90s R&B and rap. But she likes some more “girl-pop” that’s not always for me, and I like a lot of VERY gangsta rap, that I can’t even envision having female fans, lmao.
I think we just enjoy what we mutually enjoy together, and mostly listen to other stuff on our own time. Once in a while I have to hear Ke$ha or something😂
❤️ Kesha!!!
My boyfriend likes punk. It's taken quite some time before to get used to it. But it never caused a division between us. I just listen to whatever he plays.
I felt like with my ex I had to get into his music which I didn't like. I wanted to be able to listen to songs that we really liked together with my s/o. And this current guy I'm seeing has similar taste in music so I feel I won't have that problem. It wasn't the cause of our breakup though but it's just something I preferred.
Then all is well. Never change yourself for anyone!
Not really something I really ever thought about. For the most part all I have been involved with shared relatively similar musical interest. Some even took preference of my music over a large part of their own. Still, I am stuck to so much of other’s music that I largely drown it out in my head if I do not care for it. Could be why I prefer silence over music when alone.
I don't care, I have quite weird taste in music so majority of people wouldn't like my music, I like to listen to classical, religious, love and army song not really the kind of music people like, most people like either metal or rap.
I don't know if metal is most people's preference
@happydayz234 In France is it especially among people my age
I've never really listened to music intimately with anyone. I always figured it to be a personal thing with your personal preferences and all that!
Odd. To me it's communal like a live show
@DrPepper12 I can get that. It'd probably be more fun that way!. Honestly it's probably just a lifestyle influenced difference in perspective. Music has always been a sort of escape for me - away from things and not towards anything. Just me and music 🎶
My music taste is very diverse so I don’t think music would be an issue altho if he has no rhythm that would be harder for me cuz music is so deeply rooted in my culture
I don't know, if you are very restrictive or narrow in your tastes, or the other person is, that seems like it would be an annoying incompatibility.
The 30 or 40 people in my band over the decades liked all sorts of different music and that made it kinda interesting! We were sort of a melting pot. You couldn't quite pin us down to one specific genre other than, rock.
For me, it's all about finding someone who appreciates the rhythm of America!
https://www.youtube.com/embed/-KoXt9pZLGMYes definitely i don't think that matters, unless music is your whole relationship, and if so thats sad. Lol
Haha true.
Yep that's also true. With each date, I'm learning more about him and seeing if I could really see myself with him long term. There's other things we are compatible in but music is my life so that was something I really found important for me.
Yep it sure can. I sent him a song a few hours ago and he really liked it. I felt like it made our bond a bit stronger. Music is so transcendental. It can lift you beyond ordinary experience and connect you to something greater.
Ok lol
Broadly and don't be offended @Simslover92 my librarian friend - no, not at all could I date a woman or make love to a woman who didn't share - my tastes in music 🎵🎶
Those tastes mmhmmm 😛 those tastes 😋 good god those tastes 😋😋😋😋
I never dated anyone who didn't share the same taste in music as me but I see this as a deal breaker for me to be honest.
Meh. It's fairly small beer. My wife doesn't read the same books I read. Life goes on.
If your number one complaint is music tastes, then you have a darn fine relationship.
not really doesn't really help because music is a solitary thing or can be done solitary
No, there has to be some overlap. She doesn't have to be a full-blown metalhead or Prog fan, but if all she likes is modern pitch-corrected pop and hip-hop it won't last long.
Yes it's good to be compatible but understand nobody is gonna like everything that you like
That's true
Sure. I mean, music is a personal thing. You don't have to love the exact same music styles.
Absolutely it will work. My wife and I listen to completely different genres of music. She does not like are long car rides together bc of my music of choice but I just am fair and listen to her genre of music as well.
I have very odd tastes in music so I am used to this.
Ofcourse it would be better of both like the same music but it shouldn't be a deal breaker, both could introduce the other to it slowly
Having shared hobbies and entertainment tastes is nice; but for a long term relationship, shared values are much more important.
Yes music is important. Can never be with someone who listens to pop and hip hop
It has for us. My girlfriend is black and I’m Rock and Roll MAGA white
It can still work if you are both tolerant about music.
yes, my girlfriend is 100% country and I am a metal head
No! You must be compatible music wise.
Couldn't agree more. Music is VERY important
Your thoughts are right!
Nope.
