My ex contacted me after being MIA and we started talking he assumed we are still dating and then I officially told him that we're not dating I told him I prefer us being friends and he said he's okay with us being friends for now... I'm confused

He’s just calling it for what it is — right now, because eventually a decision will be made as to either try again as a couple, be friends with benefits, or be nothing at all. It is naive to think you can be fully platonic with someone you still have feelings for. Like are you ready to give him advice about other women? Or to listen when he needs to vent about a woman? Are you ready to watch him date again and be cool with it? Because I’m willing to bet the answers to that are no. On top of that, a straight single man won’t invest time in a woman unless he’s trying to get something out of it.
