Some seem to pull through just fine, but idealize the first greatly (sometimes disappointed later to find out what she's up to years later, which bursts the fantasy bubble).

Others just go through the motions and end up PUA/player type guys who can't commit to anyone.

I will be honest we do get over our first love.
But it's like as soon as the sadness hits , it will be back, the funny thing is even if it was a crush it will comeback.

a part of this, is we imagine a life with that person.
Something way out of our league.
It also depends upon the behaviour of our significant one, we know that everyone has their different personalities, different lifes.
So we love the image of the love, not the person in reality.
Like an imaginary friend.
But not the person in reality.

The problem is that the image we have of our first love, the way we remember that person, is the way they were when we were with them. But everyone changes with time. We grow older and more mature. We have experiences that change us. Our needs may change. That is one reason why it is a very bad risk to seek out your first love later on in life. They are not the person we remember. They have changed. So have we. I'm not saying it's always bound to fail, but, you know...
And of course, NEVER seek out your first love it you are not single and available. Old feelings can come flooding back and you can get into a bind, with two loves you cannot let go of. And you risk terribly hurting your spouse, who loved you, trusted you, cared for you, and had children with you, and for what? For an old fantasy. I've seen this happen. Don't go there!
