If you're hung up on that one thing then yeah cut him loose so a sensible gal can have her shot at him.

The "hi honey how was your day?" is super cliche... I'm pretty sure he was asking you different things that are the equivalent. Alternatively, it he's a QUIET GUY then he's making space for you to open up and tell him about your day.

Not knowing anything else about you or him, that's the best guess.

If he's actually trying to get back together with you after you've done this to him he's a pretty foolish guy.

Okay, so if you’ve communicated the problems and he isn’t receptive then yeah, it’s fair to break up because at least you’ve given him multiple chances to correct himself. Asking about your day is one thing but communication in general is a big deal, so if it’s not important to him then I’d just let him go.
